Rolling Along..

After yesterday afternoons problems with silver, I've finaly gotten around to getting cacti to plot the tempratures reported by the system sensors.

Now I just need to get around to ploting the disk tempratures and another graph for the UPS status...

Thanks to some nice holes in Cacti SUCS was effectively off-line as we were unwittingly used to perform a DoS. The attack was so feroshious it brought our modest gateway to its knees with a massive number of packets.

Cleaning up what was left on silver, reporting all machines involved and then investigating the scripts and relevant IRC servers/channels took most of the afternoon.

I'm now happy everything is clean, however this is a good excuse to increase the level of security in place. To this end Sits has been playing with SELinux.

Due to its horrendously complex nature various things will be broken until we get it right. If you spot anything thats not working pop into Milliways and tell us.. that is assuming Milliways isn't totaly confused as well.

They say bad things come in threes..

Today I sit my last exam of the summer, which would be a good thing if it weren't computability theory, a subject in which my limited understanding has been greatly hindered by the very same person who was meant to be making it clear to me.

Anyway.. this morning gateway panicked (again) which means I'm in Uni a hell of a lot earlier than I planed, and a problem I thought we had solved has decided to rear its ugly head again. Given that we have replaced everything bar the disk I'm thing a fresh install of sarge onto a different disk would be a good plan. Hopefully that will solve that problem before everyone disappears for the summer. Still waiting for the 3rd..

So its exam season.. Thus I want to put off revision as much as possible.

Having exhausted the standard methods, such as tidying my room, early on, and not having any good books to read I went in search of something else. It just so happened at this point that Will(wedge) was in milliways asking about how to go about getting a blog so he could join the SUCS planet.

Its long been the plan to write something so staff can blog on an occasional basis, and as it happens Andy(welshbyte) had recently written a basic blog for his website that we could base our system off. To cut a long story short, 10 days later there are now 5 people working on the project, and we have a system that can provide anyone with a blog and a nice interface to view/edit them.

Expect to see blogs added to the list of services offered come the start of term!
