Hello everyone :) Kyara/Joss here, apologies for not writing my manifesto up sooner. I am running for the roles of President, Secretary and Publicity Officer, but mostly I would like to be President.

I would like to be President firstly because I have been asking people what they think about SUCS, and mostly people don’t want to join/don’t think the society is that great because they feel the gaming isn’t up to scratch. I would like to fix this by perhaps organise a weekly, or monthly, event where everyone who would like to could get together and play multiplayer games on consoles. Owning various consoles I don’t mind lending them out for an evening. Asking around I have also discovered that out of the games we do have online more choice would be nice, perhaps getting a rts or even a rpg online.

I would also like to find out which games work with linux, and perhaps once the gaming side is more known organise a LAN party in the SUCS room when it is not being used, with tournaments and prizes for winners.

We would of course have to make what we are doing known to people so they know about these things, perhaps by sticking posters up and putting adverts in waterfront or even by word of mouth. I don’t expect for this to work straight away but with enough interest and effort I believe it will happen. The reason I joined SUCS was for the gaming aspect, so it will be improved!

I would also like to organise more social events such as perhaps an outing to laser quest (several people in SUCS seemed interested at this idea) or maybe, as aeternus has done, an outing to the cinema, and perhaps organise lightning talks to occur more often, with people suggesting topics they would like to hear about.

Also, as it is the 20th birthday next year for SUCS, we will be having a huge celebration. Either by making the beach party bigger and better, (yes, I know I wasn’t around last year to even know where to begin on this… but I’m open to ideas :)) and/or by organising something new.

I believe that I am an approachable person for people to talk to, if anyone has any ideas for the improvement for SUCS or on a personal level if anyone has any problems. I also feel that I can at least explore any ideas that anyone may come up with, and hopefully use them to make SUCS better (or at least, get someone else to… :P).

I know I am not afraid to ask for help if things go wrong, and hopefully I will learn from any mistakes I make (which I anticipate happening – no one is perfect :)). I also may not be able to get all these things done, but I can at least try!

Thank you for taking out the time to read this, and I hope I have helped you make your decision on who to vote for.

-Kyara

President/Secretary Manifesto 2007/2008

Hi, I am running for  president and secretary.

I think that you should vote for me because I am a hard working and
enthusiastic young person. I can bring lots of time, effort and leadership
to the SUCS exec. I am in the room and active a lot so I am available to
help easily.

I think that the society is going along steadily and has lots of members but a lot of the members are not active, I intend to get more involvement from members who are not as active by introducing new activities and events that will appeal to them. I also think that it would be good to find new ways to find money for the society, one way which we could do this would be to introduce a lower cost membership just for people on campus who just want to to use the game server.

I think that introducing technical help sessions where people can come to the room at a specific time and get help with coursework or personal projects from the more experienced members.

In a year I want the society to have more active members and to make it easier for members to get help from the society and have a wider range of events that are not necessarily aimed at the more technical members of the society.

To make this happen we need to poll our members on what they want to do, and what help we can give them as a society so that we can do events aimed at them.

Please vote for me for president and secretary, if I get voted in for both, I will choose to be president over secretary.

Please vote for me

Eclipse

Hello.. Here is my manifesto for the Positions of "El Presidente", Publicity and Treasurer.

I would have run last year but alas i didn't really understand the protocol and to be honest I didn't think I was ready for the job at hand.

A year later, I'm a year older, a year wiser. Watching the Society over the past year and a half has shown that there are a few other avenues I'd like to look into on top of the ones we currently do.

So lets get down to the basics...

  1. Why Should you Vote for me at all??

Well I've always been strong at Maths. I've had plenty of experience with cash handling and figures working at a Supermarket and also I have good organisational Ability and as a Student Rep for engineering I'm experienced with discussing things with committees. I think that I'd be a good candidate for the role(s).

2. My opinion of where we are at present.

At Present I think the society is going through a period of change. With the general course change and attitude to Computing changing we have a prime opportunity to show to the SU that SUCS isn't a "Geek" Society and to show that we are a large, active Society. We also should start to look hard about how to secure better Facilities for the Society. Also I'd like to discuss with the LIS whether they could open the Gaming Ports over the weekend so that people could have the ability to play games like EQ2, CSS and other online games with their friends not at Swansea. I know it may not work but it is definitely something to look into, we can from this look at which games are popular across the University and see which games we could add to the Servers, Ideally I'd like to upgrade caesium sometime over the next year to allow us to keep up with the Multi player Server requirements for recent releases.

3. Where would I like the Society to be a years time?

In a year I'd love to see the Society being one of the larger societies in the University. More social events, continuing the Lightning talks, maybe starting to teach people how Linux is now more than ever a viable alternative to Windows.

4. How will we do this???

With Social Events we need to Publicise them more, We should be putting adverts in Waterfront and around the University. There are many people that I've spoken to who like Linux more than Windows who I've been redirecting to SUCS. That may bring more membership, which would increase the likelyhood we could push campus services for a bigger room also give us a larger kitty and may allow us to do a general Upgrade of the rest of the Room. (New Tables, Chairs, the rest of the desktops, start saving for TFT monitors) and the like.

I think that if we have a strong Exec offering new ideas there is an oppotunity to grow from strength to strength.

Thanks for reading :)

~Chris

President

Hi all,

My name is Grant and I would like to run for the position of the SUCS
president this year. If you haven't closed the window already then
please read on to find out why nominating/voting for me would be a good
idea.

Firstly I plan to lower taxes, create more public holidays and reduce
our carbon emissions...ahem, yes.

Firstly, because I am in my second year and I believe I have sufficient
knowledge of the university and how things work. I am one of the class
reps for the level 2 Computer Science students so I have experience in
taking action when I receive enquiries from people.

I have experience in public speaking and giving presentations. I am also
skilled in writing persuasive letters so pestering the SU for more
monies to better the society wont be a problem ;)

I am confident that I could take on the responsibility of the other
members of the exec in their absence.

I think the society is currently the best society in the whole university.

Having joined several in my first year, SUCS was the only one I rejoined
the year after. The use of the room, along with the regular socials,
forum and milliways makes it great value for money and the best way to
make friends when you're new to the university.

So why I am I telling you all this when you already know it? Because I
plan to maintain this awesome status of the society and better it in any
way possible.

I want to arrange regular tutorial sessions on popular programming
languages to help people widen their range of experience in using
different languages.

The lightning talks are already a huge success and I'd definitely like
to keep these going with more and more volunteering to talk.

So that about sums it all up! I'd really like to be voted for this
position and am willing to put in a lot of time and effort to do the job
well so please vote for me!

Thanks.
Grant.

Anybody running for a SUCS Exec position should consider telling people why they are worth a vote. In past years, candidates have written short manifestos, explaining why they are suited to the role and what plans they might have for the year ahead. If you write one, e-mail it to exec at sucs.org and we'll add it to this blog for everyone to read. Some questions you might like to think about:
  • Why Should I Vote for you as X?
  • What do you think you can bring to this role? / What are your strengths?
  • Where do you think the society is at the moment?
  • Where do you want to the society to be in a year? / What do you want to achieve?
  • How do you think you can make your goals for the society happen?
For more information on the structure of the executive, and rules of the nominations/election, check out the SUCS Constitution: http://sucs.org/About/Constitution
