Looking east from the footbridge at Severn Tunnel Junction station / gorsaf Cyffordd Twnnel Hafren in Rogiet, South Wales. Note that the arch on the left of the picture, that a First Great Western HST is travelling under, is not the mouth of the Severn Tunnel, but a road bridge giving access to Caldicot station, ¾ mile from Severn Tunnel Junction and just visible in the middle distance on the right.
The 1:90 gradient to the lowest point on the tunnel, beneath The Shoots shipping channel, can clearly be seen. From the end of the level section beneath the river, the tunnel rises at 1:100 up to the English side.
