Welcome to the Hiking Club website, where you can find information on all our activities. On the walking side of the things, we'll hire a suitable sized coach and go off exploring the countryside every weekend during term time. There are also extended trips during the easter and summer vacations to more distant locations. A complete list of the walks planned can be found here.

No club would be complete without the social side, so we also plan additional social gatherings (apart from the hikes!) usually on a tuesday or wednesday. Activities range from meals, bowling to short night hikes in fancy dress on halloween. Running around the hillside dressed as V or a ghoul can be very funny! A complete list of the socials is here. The major event of the social calendar is the christmas dinner. A chance for us to meet each other in our finery instead of shorts or waterproof jackets. Some of us even smarten up quite nicely.

You can Join the Club or Sign Up for the Saturday/Sunday walks in JC's (coffee side) every Wednesday and Friday between 12:30 & 1:30pm.
Alternatively, if you miss a sign up you can always phone or email us.

  • Three Cliffs Bay

Set in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, surrounded by photogenic scenery including the tallest mountain in south Wales (Pen y Fan). Not too strenious!

  • Dorset Weekend Away

    Friday - Sunday

Apparently this region is amazing, and just happens to be the birthplace of Spanner. She'll be giving us the grand tour which shall include numerous ice cream stops, geographical uberness of the Jurassic coast and a pub that brews its own cider!

  • Lord Hereford's Knob

    Saturday

    Cost £ 6

If you think that name is funny (as our chair does), we shall also be starting in Three Cocks. A wild walk, overlooking both England and Wales. All innuendo jokes welcomed by our esteemed leader.

  • Preseli Hills

    Sunday

    Cost £ 6

This green yet ruggedly rocky landscape is steeped in history. Ancient monuments dot the landscape. The blue stones of Preseli were used in Stonehenge.

  • Pen y Fan

    Sunday

    Cost £ 6

The tallest mountain in the Brecon Beacons at 886m, but on the otherhand we start half way up. This is a well travelled route due to excessive amounts of stunning scenery.

  • Gower Free Walk

    Cost £ FREE

This will be a free day walk, starting from Uni and taking in some of the scenic parts of Gower. You don't have to be a member to come along!

This is a Geologist's Dream, with Lego-like cliffs and rocks to play with. These are encrusted with fearsome fossils from the Triassic Era.

  • Dartmoor Weekend Away

    Friday - Sunday

    Cost £ 35

Cosy up in a quirky camping barn in the depths of Dartmoor, with satisfying strolls between sledging on the surrounding Tors. Toast your tooties over an open fire in the local pub, with a strong pint to banish the beasts of the moor.

A jazzed up jaunt over jolly old sod. It will take in Clyne Woods, the beach at Caswell and the pier (with ice cream shop) at Mumbles.

  • Usk Reservoir

    Saturday

    Cost £ 6

In the Brecon Beacons, and apparently by a reservoir. This walk is drowning in wildlife (Red Kites etc) and carries views in all directions (Pen y Fan, Bannau Sir Gaer...)

  • Rhinogs Weekend Away

    Friday

    Cost TBC

This trip is to the southern part of Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. It normally includes a walk around the Rhinogs peaks and Cader Idris. If we're lucky it might be snowy as it has been in the past.

  • Pen Allt Mawr

    Saturday

    Cost £ 6

For the last 3 years this walk has been done in the snow. Another mountain jaunt along a rugged ridgeline with rampant raunchy rocks (and a view of some sort...)

  • Bannau Sir Gaer

    Saturday

    Cost £ 6

This is one of the best walks the club offers, following an amazing ridge in the middle of the Brecon Beacons. There are numerious sinkholes to play in and hide as well. The area is made famous by Dan-yr-Ogof (the national showcaves of Wales) which is underneath.

  • Rhossili to Port Eynon

    Sunday

    Cost £ 6

This is the chance for the new committee to show us what they are made of. This coastal walk comprises of chaos, comedy and crackpots. Luckily the scenery makes up for it.

  • TBC

    Sunday

    Cost £ 6

  • Snowdonia Long Weekend Away

    Friday - Monday

    Cost TBC

snowdonia in North Wales contains the highest peak in the UK, outside of Scotland and this will be conquered by us intrepid explorers. We might be overtaken by old grannys using the stream train which goes up the side of the mountain, but we will also climb and conquer many old cronny free peaks.

  • Vice's Variable Vacation

    Saturday

    Cost £ 6

Now we hand over to the vice
with a walk that is sure to be nice.
    Across the mountains and rivers
with drinks that will damage our livers.
This will be a jolly old jaunt
perhaps in our normal old haunt.

  • Ystradfellte Waterfall Walk

    Sunday

    Cost £ 6

THE BEST WALK EVER. It will include lots of stunning waterfalls which you can: walk behind, swim under, jump into and photograph to your hearts content. DO NOT MISS (and bring a bikini).

    Saturday

    Cost £ 6

A walk set in the Pembrokeshire National Park, which follows the stunning coastline to the tourist haven of Tenby. This means that there are plenty of ice cream spots available on the hike!

Recent Email Newsletters and Announcements

The three most recent annoucements are linked below. Each week normally outlines the next walk/social and also a review of the previous hike, with pictures.

Welcome Back!

Hello to our new members and welcome back to our returning members. All of us in the hiking committee are happy to see you and are hoping you’re as excited for a new year of walks and socials as we are.

For those returning members who saw us at freshers fayre you’ll have noticed that there have been many changes over this past summer. The merging of the SU with the AU has finally arrived. We are now no longer Athletic Union, but the new sport brand "Sport Swansea". Hopefully this will improve the experience we can give to you our members.

The joining process of Sports clubs this year has changed dramatically - You need a brand new sport Swansea membership to join any sports club now - these are available online here. The Sport Swansea membership will give you a transaction number (always useful to keep)and will be automatically added to your student union account. Due to the new SU update, your SU account is now the same as your university account and can be accessed through your university login details. You can now join the club online at your convenience, here.

Our hikes are all day activities and we aim to get back home around 6:00pm. You will need food, water, a waterproof coat and suitable footwear.

One last final thing we have a new email address for you to contact us with, it’s hiking@swansea-union.co.uk .

Click here for Rhodri Bevan's Website. It contains lots of photos from previous hikes, including panoramas, as well as route information on many walks. This includes profiles of the hikes as well as gradient information.
