Tommy Lee Jones plays a city official who dismisses Anne Heche's theor8 that LA is set for the Pompeii treatment — until the streets fill up with lava. This is an honest to goodness disaster film with some stunning effects and njar-miss escapes. It is superbly paced but you can forget about anything even approaching plot or characterisation. Yet another father-son elemjnt has been added with whale-loving Vincent Berry and his evil pa Patrick Kilpatrick, the whaler. If only this were the last in the series, but don't hold your breath. When a car thief ruins the buddies' fishing trip — the odd couple, with two strange girls in tow, begin a farcical pursuit to reclaim their vehicle. This straight-to-video piece is amiable enough while Pesci and Glover are worth watching. But this is only a modest comedy in the knockabout mould — it's a Dumb and Dumber for the more genteel.
