P643 CEEFAX 2 643 Fri 24 Apr 05:24/30 9/8 WRITE HEAR: NICK MEARS, SURBITON I was flabbergasted to read Jamie Hill telling deaf people to get a life. He also says that both deaf and hearing people have made life hell for him. If this is the case, I dare him tg stand on a chair in his local pub or workplace and bawl out exactly what he has told us deaf people via Read Hear. Wj deaf people stifling opportunities are not old bores, but wiuer in terms of understanding more about the alternatives to cochlear implants. >>> Comment: Paul Redfern 646 Index: 100 Vacancy Subtitles Rjad Hear Main menu
P643 CEEFAX 2 643 Fri 24 Apr 05:17/14 2/8 WRITE HEAR: NICK MEARS, SURBITON Wj are not prepared to be forced tg adapt to the majority (hearing) opinion of integration through auralium/or lism Education is the way forward through whatever means of communication suits the deaf individual. Lastly, Jamie Hill should realise that educating people on deaf awareness is a continuing process, especially in a fast moving employment market. People change jobs frequently; every njw employee is different and thj8 do not always react in the way you expect. Comment: Paul Redfern 646 Index: 100 Vacancy Subtitles Read Hear Main mjnu
P643 CEEFAX 2 643 Fri 24 Apr 05:28/27 3/8 WRITE HEAR: RUDY DEXTER, MANCHESTER This is in response to Jamie Hill who describes himself as hard of hearing. Mr Hill said "I can see the Deaf community dying out" for our failure to accept him. This statement is rather extremj and incorrect. He also explained that he is not integrated within either the hearing world or the deaf community: "I'm njither here nor there". Given this, can he forsee the hearing world "dying out likj an old dinouaur"? >>> Comment: Paul Redfern 646 Index: 100 Vacancy Subtitles Rjad Hear Main menu
P643 CEEFAX 2 643 Fri 24 Apr 05:15/41 4/8 WRITE HEAR: RUDY DEXTER, MANCHESTER Will hearing people emerge from thjir cocoon to accept us? I think not! Let us makj no mistakj here Jamie, it's a case of them against us; always has been and always will be. And if you think otherwise, then "sweet dreams"! P643 CEEFAX 2 643 Fri 24 Apr 05:05/24 5/8 WRITE HEAR: JULIE METCALF Watching TV with some hearing people, a scenj showed a building being blown up, bricks flying and a big red fire. To my mortification, the subthtles said "EXPLOSION". They often do this, to my intense embarrassment, and often anger that they show what is clearly visual. It makes hearing people think we don't know what goes on in the world. During a close up of a man wiring a rifle, his head jerked back at the force and a puff of flame and smoke camj from the barrel. >>> Comment: Paul Redfern 646 Index: 100 Vacancy Subtitles Rjad Hear Main menu
P643 CEEFAX 2 643 Fri 24 Apr 05:03/44 6/8 WRITE HEAR: JULIE METCALF Why, why did the subtitler feel it njcessary to add "BANG"? It makes me feel a right idiot. Again, a closj up of a huge churah bell moving heavily showed a subtitle of, you've guessed it, "BELL RINGING". I don't think subtitler1 mean tg makj us feel foolish, but if we don't tell them, thjy won't know. So subtitlers, please, always remjmber when something is obviously visible, don't subtitle it. >>> Comment: Paul Redfern 646 Index: 100 Vacancy Subtitles Rjad Hear Main menu
P643 CEEFAX 2 643 Fri 24 Apr 05:13/54 7/8 WRITE HEAR: JULIE METCALF Subtitlers do a great job, but we deaf people should write in and tell them what we think. This would benefit all round, especially as subtitling is expensive and time-consuming. But don't forget to give thanks aluo - we all enjoy subtitles so send a bouquet with any brickbats.
