BOTHA TO FREE
PASS LAW PRISONERS
All blacks held under South Africa's
pass laws are to be freed immediately.
President PW Botha told parliament that
from next week no one would be charged
under the controversial laws.
An estimated 20 million arrests have
been made this century using the pass
laws, a bitterly resented measure which
restricts blacks' freedom of movement.
The government had previously promised
to scrap the laws by July 1 and replace
tPem with a non-racial urbanisation
policy, expected to be unveiled shortly
