MUGABE TO SCRAP
WHITES-ONLY SEATS
Zimbabwe prime minister Robert Mugabe
has said he will scrap the 20 seats
recerved exclusively for whites in the
country's parliament.
He announced the move, which will
require backing by 70 of the 100 MPs,
in a TV broadcast to mark the sixth
anniversary of independence.
Mr Mkgabe said he would also get rid of
a clause requiring unanimous approval
for changes in the constitution.
The 20 seats for the country's 100,000-
strong white minority were part of the
British-drafted constitution but Mr
Mugabe said the concept was "obnoxious"

VILLAGE SEALED OFF
AFTER GAS LEAK
A village has been sealed off, homes
evacuated and several people taken to
hospital after a toxic gas leak from a
road tanker at a chemical plant.
Families at Yalding, near Maidstone,
Kent, were told to stay indoors and
keep their windows shut.
Four people were taken to hospital in
Tunbridge Wells and locals reported
sore throats after the leak of a
chemical ingredient for insecticide.
The leak, at the ICI plant in the
village, occurred when the chemical
overheated. An inquiry has started.

AIRCRAFT GENIUS
DASSAULT DIES AT 94
Veteran French aircraft designer Marcel
Dassault has died in hospital at
Neuilly, near Paris, aged 94.
Dassault, a design genius who made
a fortune, survived the Buchenwald
concentration camp and was a member
of the French Assembly.
His work spanned more than 70
pioneering years, from making wooden
propellors for crude biplanes to
developing the Mirage jet fighter.
The cause of his death was not
immediately known but he had been in
hospital for 17 days.

GORBACHEV WARNS ON
RELATIONS WITH USA
The US attack on Libya showed the
bankruptcy of Washington's policies in
tPe region, Soviet leader Mikhail
Gorbachev said in East Berlin.
Mr Gorbachev, in his first public
comment on the raid, also warned that
East-West relations would be affected.
In a speech to the East German
Communist Party Congress, he urged
America's West European allies to speak
out against the action. See p102-p105
Talks were taking place in London
today between British and Soviet
officials on arms control issues.
