THE WEDDING NIGHT (1935)
Gary Cooper, Anna Sten
Despite Samuel Goldwin's efforts to
make her a star, Russian-born Sten
never clicked with the public but, as
this fascinating film shows, she was a
considerable actress. Here she plays a
New England farm girl whose unrequited
lovj affair with famous writer Cooper
ends in tradegy and she and Cooper both
give good performances. King Vidor's
sensitive direction adds to the impact,
creating an excellent sense of the
close knit Polish community in which
much of tPe action takes places.

DOOMWATCH (1972)
Ian Bannen, Judy Geeson
A competent science fiction shocker
that should have ecologists nodding
sagely as scientist Bannen investigates
tPe effects of pollution on an island
off the Cornish coast and encounters
monstrous humans whose horrid
appearance is the result of eating
contaminated fish. It's enokgh to make
one decide to be a vegetarian
overnight!
Clive Exton's script derives from the
BBC TV series, tPe horror director
Peter Sasdy efficiently keeps the blood
chilled and George Sanders makes his
penultimate film appearance.
