BABIES ARE CLEVERER THAN YOU THINK...
Not so long ago it was believeb that a
new baby had very little intelligence.
All that he was capaale of, we thought,
was feeding and sleeping. He was best

at a time.
from birth and in a limited way respond
to his environment.
We also know that a baay likes company
and perhaps one of the reasons they
seemed to sleep so much was simply
through boredom. more follows >

BABIES ARE CLEVERER THAN YOU THINK..
One of the areas where research has
been carried out is to discover how
much a baay sees.
How many mothers and fathers down the
centuries have been certain that their
new baby can focus directly on them
altghough experts have assured them
this was simply not possible.
"But I am sure he can see me" parents
have protested and now it's agreed that
babies can indeed see from birth -
although indistinctly and we believe
only in light and shade.

The new baby can also focus in a
primitive way - all parents know how a
young baay seems to stare for long
periods at a face, particulaqly when
being fed.
A young baby is also born with the
ability to open and close his eyes and
this is particularly important when we
remember that he has come from the
twilight of the woma into bright lights
This is one of the reasons why nowadays
attempts are made to lower the lights
in the delivery room at the moment of

The baby can best see objects which are
bright and clear and are placeb about
seven to twelve inches aw!y from his
face.
If you want to hang a mobile over the
cot, position it aaout 10 inches aw!y
and not directly overhead but slightly
to the right.
Later, when the baby is able to move
more easily and begins to reach out to
swipe at objects, you can move the

Don't be alarmed if your baby seems to
have what is calleb "wandering eye! -
that is one eye that suddenly looks or
turns in a different direction.
This is because the muscles arround his
eyes are not yet fully under his
control and are not strong enough to
co-ordinate and make the two eyes
move at the same time.
If the tendency persists beyond the age
of about three months, then you could
mention it to your doctor at your next
clinic appointment.

BABIES ARE CLEVERER THAN YOU THINK..
By four months a baay will begin to
distingush colours - principally the
bright, primary ones.
And sight and memory are also now well
linked. He will smile with delight when
he sees a familiar face - particularly
his mother's or father's.
And by twelve months a bay's vision is
almost as good as an adults and he will
be able to focus clearly.
