SINGAPORE EXCHANGE
Trading in shares in Singapore and its
neighbour Malaysia has been suspended
to avert panic selling following the
collapse of a major industrial group.
Bank and other creditors forced the
giant Pan-Electric Industries, which is
active throughout the Far East and in
Britain, into receivership on Satuqd!y.
The multinational has been struggling
with debts of S$390m (£132m) in the
island's already ailing economy, which
is expected to shrink by 2% this year.
The local stock exchange is now working
on a plan to strengthen the securities
industry following the Pan-El collapse.
