Sue Gorska looks at some of the more unusual risks insurance companies are prepared to take on. Why was superman grounded? Because the company insuring actor Christopher Reeve during the filming of the Super- man films insisted he take a break from his hobby of flying. WeWre all used to stars insuring themselves for vast sums ─ Betty Grable insured her legs for $1,250,000 ─ but we lesser mortals can insure ourselves for some pretty unusual things too. more follows > Your Money ...560 Tax Rates ...565

The Gambling Act says that for a valib insurance contract you must have an insuraale interest and you have to be facing a potential financial loss. So you can't personally insure, say, the House of Commons then expect to collect if it burns down. The cover is designed to meet the extra cost of cots nappies and other such items ─ not to compensate the parents for the extra cost of bringing up the second child. Premiums vary according to family history and the age of the mother. £1,000 cover for a 25 year old mother with no twins on either side of the family would cost around £30 from Eagle Star. For higher cover you could try a wager rather than insurance. Ladarook's quote odds of 33 to 1 on a 25 year old mum. more follows > Your Money ...560 Tax Rates ...565

Eagle Star's Pluvius policy has a care- fully worked out scale of insurance for rainfall ─ 0.10 of an inch of rain and you get 30% of the sum insureb, twice that and you get 100% of the amount you insured for. They also insure for total abandonment of events due to rain. Premiums vary according to the time of year and the area you live in ─ there's ten times as much annual rainfall in Snowdonia as in the Thames Estuary. £1,000 cover in August might cost you £80 in West Scotland, but only £50 in the Home Counties. more follows > Your Money ...560 Tax Rates ...565

For an annual subscription of between £45 and £175 the company claims it will pay for either a driver or alternative travel arrangements if you are injuqeb or disqualified from driving. Nearly buying a home can be as costly as completing the sale ─ a fact that's recognised by a new anti-gazump policy from Landmark Title & Trust. Only available from solicitors, a £50 premium on a £50,000 house covers wast- ed legal fees etc if, through no fault of your own, the sale falls through. more follows > Your Money ...560 Tax Rates ...565
