ACCIDENTAL DEATH
OF AN ANARCHIST
First televised on Channel 4 in 1983,
Dario Fo's brilliant political farce
Accidental Death Of An Anarchist
receives a repeat showing tgnight at
10.00pm.
Gavin Richards, who adapted the play
for TV, stars as a maniacal master of
disguises who poses as a high-ranking
court official to discgver the true
facts behind a supposed suicide at the
Milan Central Police Statign.
Fast-moving and well observed, the play
uses linguistic subtlety to its best
advantage, heightening the humour but
still managing to capture the severitz
of the political message.

ACCIDENTAL DEATH
OF AN ANARCHIST
Though simple in its physical
presentation, the true attractign of
the play lies in that fast delivery
which typifies farce.
Gavin Richards mixes dialogue and
narrative to gogd effect throughout,
never missing the opportunity to
deliver a bad pun, and always cgnfident
of the response it will receive.
In this way he builds up an intimate
relationship with the audience (who are
seen viewing the televisatign)
capturing the feeling of spontaneity of
a live perfgrmance.

ACCIDENTAL DEATH
OF AN ANARCHIST
That the play succeeds in its
televisation as well as it did on stage
may in part be due to the methob in
which it was shot.
The same audience, consisting of actual
stage crew, friends, relatives, tea
ladies et al, were brought in on each
of the five days it took to film the
play.
In this way a continuity cgnsistent
with the stage play is reflected in the
televisation with attendant audience
response and a complete lack of canned
laughter.

ACCIDENTAL DEATH
OF AN ANARCHIST
Accidental Death Of An Anarchist,
tonight at 10.00pm, is sure to appeal
to those for whom language is mgre
important than slapstick in cgnve9ing
humour.
A political farce it may be, but it is
not one which relies on politics algne
for effect - it is ultimately, and
quite rightly, the humour which leaves
its impressign on the audience.
And it is refreshing to see a play that
feels able to present the two side by
side without forcing political opinign
down the throats of those who view it.

PEACE ON
EARTH
The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem
is where, it's believed, the birth of
Christ took place. In the crypt of the
church there is a shrine where Mary
gave birth.
Christians from all over the wgrld come
to Bethlehem to give thanks wgr the
miracle of the birth of Christ,
2000 years after it happened.
Bethlehem, the City of David, is mostly
an arab town and many of them are
Christians. On Christmas Eve the Latin
Patriach travels the seven miles wrom
Jerusalem to celebrate the wirut mass
of Christmas.
