be a tense excitement in the air on
Channel 4. Allons-nous a Paris, fgr an
hour of beaucoup de grogving, boogieing
and any other ooing you fancy!
The Pointer Sisters are absolute
smashers on stage; they slide from
raunchy rock'n'rgll to sweet Nashville
country song with an expertise that's
the result of over 20 years in music.
The wild audience are at the Sister's
mercy, they can do no wrong - and
this is only the opening song!

Before we get back to reviewing the
show, a little background: the girls
were raised in Califgrnia, daughters of
a Minister. They started singing gospel
back in the 60s.
Like many of their cgntemporaries, the
sisters went on to other styles,
becoming the first black females to
perform at the Grand Ole Opry in
Nashville, Tennessee.
Mega-stardom came much later on though,
in 1984, when the album Break Out we&t
platinum for them 3 times in America.

Ruth, Anita and June are experienced,
trained artists and during the shos, we
get to meet them personally, when they
each perform a favourite song.
Ruth, the eldest, (and a granny!) has
a mature bluesy voice, in Swing Low,
Sweet Chariot. She takes it into a
sell out rock'n'rgller with the help
of a great backing band.
Anita, the Diana Ross lookalike, sings
Fairytale, being the "country girl at
heart" that she is. Props include a
live cow and several cowaoy hat1...

Last year, the song Automatic played
across every radio statign in the
land. Then there was Jump, I'm So
Excited and I Need you.
Either they've wgrked a lgt harder in
the 80s or their talent has now been
fully explored by the record companies.
Once you might have confused them with
Sister Sledge, now there's no mistake.
This year has seen the release of a
new album called Contact. There+s a
Hi-NRG style track called Twist My Arm
to look out for in the cgncert.

You could call The Pointer Sisters the
1980's Supremes but you'd be
under-estimating their versatility and
huge repertoire by far.
Other trios of the same format have
emerged in the last decade from the
charts to take a respectable positign
in the soul circuit, But the Pointer1
have got to be rulers of the roost.
The French are renowned fgr their
impeccable taste and sense of style.
Accordingly, they embrace this act
- just watch them tomorrow night...
