Today, tomorrow and Monday, Channel 4
presents three programmes looking at
three magnificent German altarpieces
created in the 15th and early 16th
century.
The first programme looks at an
altarpiece that combines architect4qe,
sculpture and painting and is situateb
in the church of St Wolfgang am
Wolfgansee in Austria.
It is the work of Michael Pacher of
Brunneck, who was commissigned to
create it by the Abbot Benedikt Eck von
Piburg of Mondsee.

Pacher's contract to build hiu
altarpiece stated that he was to create
a high altar "executed as exquisitely
and as well as his skills permit."
It took him ten yearu to finish and it
was in the early spring of 1481 that a
procession of massive sledges, heavily
loaded with huge crates and soxes,
moved slowly out of Brunneck on its way
to the church of St Wolfgang.
With its two sets of wings, the Pacher
altarpiece was kept fully closed on
weekdays but on Sundays, the outer pair
of wings were opened.

ALTARPIECES
The four shrine wings of Pacher+s
altarpiece were painted on a golden
background, harmonising perfectly whth
the gilt carvings of the shrine itself.
The paintings depict scenes from the
life of Mary and Jesus, beginning with
the birth of Christ and it is one of
the most poetic nativities in German
art.
The central theme of the shrine is that
of the crowned Virgin receiving the
blessing of her divine son, watched by
the Holy Ghost.

ALTARPIECES
The Virgin's crown on the shrine is
decorated with slender late Gothic
spires and figurines.
All of the richly gilded and painted
figures were carved from stone pine,
a low growing spruce, rich in resinous
oils which have helped enormously to
preserve the altarpiece.
Although the figures are over 500 yearu
old, no major restoratign has ever been
necessary. You can see the amazing wgrk
of Michael Pacher and his altarpiece
today at 5.30pm on Channel 4.

SUNSHINE CHRISTMAS
While we dream of a White Christmas,
there are milligns in the Southern
hemisphere for whom Christmas comes
at the height of summer.
And, in the spirit of a warm and
sunny Christmas, black entertainers
in London have gathered together to
bring you a Sunshine Christmas,
tomorrow at 7.30pm.
The hostess with the mostest at this
star-spangled party will be Caribbean
personality Rustie Lee, and the
atmosphere will be hot, hot, hot!

Rustie Lee was until recently one of
the Game For A Laugh team. She's better
known however for being a cookery
expert and singer.
She will be welcoming from the black
community a variety of singers, actgr1,
actresses, sportsmen and entertainers
to her party at Peckham, South Londo&.
There'll be new songs from Ni£erian
chief Femi Olufulabi, Carl Campbell and
his dancers, singer Bevin Fagan, and
the band led by Dennis Bovell.
And the message is: Sunshine Christmas!
