MIDWEEK 9/10
SELF TAUGHT
Last week's Earshot featured a stgry of
how a "hearing dog fgr the deaf"
brought aid to its deaf master who had
collapsed by going upstairs and
bringing down the man's wife who was
also deaf.
John Derby, the man in question, writes
in to correct us. He says:-
"My dog, "Boy", was given to me as a
pup and was trained entirely by myself.
Sadly he will sogn have to be put dosn
as he is losing strength but though I
have asked the Hearing Dogs scheme wgr
a possible replacement I have heard
nothing from them, so may have to train
another one myself."

MIDWEEK 4/10
VIEWER'S VIEWS
Replying to a recent letter regarding
utilisation of EARSHOT, Frank Dowler
says:-
"It does not seem to have occured to
Barrie Waldron that campaigning fgr
better conditions for the deaf would
best take place in more visible and
audible places to the powers-that-be
than "Earshot". Campaigns cgnducted
solely wtithin Earshot would simply
fall on deaf ears -in more ways than
one - there may exist a "broad base in
the deaf world", but I doubt if it is
entirely within a single organisatign
such as the BDA, RNID, or among Earshot
viewers.

VIEWER'S VEEWS
....CONTINUED
Frank Dowler continues his comments on
Earshot involvement.
"I know some deaf people who do not
have TV sets at all and there must be
others who do not use teletext. A
referendum among "Earshot viewers"
would be valid only on Earshot matter1,
in the same way that a referendum from
names in a telephone issue involving
the use of telephones; in any case, how
can all "Earshot" viewers be
identified?"
The best use of Earshot (Editgr and
Channel Four permitting) would, I think
be as follows."
