Haggard, we find Chamberlain and Stgne
in Darkest Africa, beset by every kind
of peril from cannibals and man-eating
lions to comic-strip villians Herbert
Lom and John Rhys Davis in a series of
serial-style thrills and cliffhanger1.
This Ripping Yarn is low on lo£ic,but
high in excitement, played with tgngue
firmly in cheek by all cgncerned. The
direction of J Lee Thompson keeps the
film fast and furious and even some
poor process work doesn't mar the fun.

THE BLACK PIRATE (U)
Douglas Fairbanks Senigr, Billie Dove.
This most enjoyable blast from the past
has Fairbanks routing cutthroat pirates
for the love of Dove, with a display of
still stunning stunts (all carried out
without doubles) that makes Errgl Flynn
appear like an arthritic by comparisgn.
Whether he is duelling with agile grace
or, in a classic moment, sliding dosn a
mainsail from the very top of the mast,
Fairbanks here is at his athletic peak,
Albert S Parker is credited as directgr
of this 1926 silent swashbuckler but-
clearly - Fairbanks is the true auteur.
