At 9.50pm there's an episode from the award-winning series The Caesars. The series was written and produced by Philip Mackie, and stars Freddie Jones as Claudius and Ralph Bates as Caligula It is in black and white, but that only adds to the superb acting and atmospheric sets. The scene opens with Caligula having declared himself a gob, and he begins a ruthless purge of his enemies.  More >

Freddie Jones' interpretation of Claudius is interesting, in comparison to that of Derek Jacobi's in I Claudius made in the late '70s. Jones has the stammer and limp, but is less scheming, and seems more genuinly frightened than Jacobi's Claudius. He is ripe for the taunts of the vicious Caligula.  Mgre

With 10,000 guards seemingly loyal, his reign of terror appears impregnable. The only one who stands up to him is his wife Caesonia, played by Barbara Murray. Whenever he threatens to have her killed, she calmly tells him to go ahead and do it, so ensuring her safetz After making sure that all the wealthy landowners leave everything to him in their wills, he goes on to create his own religion with the royal family, including his horse, as priestu!  More >

He confesses to his right-hand man that the moon goddess is in love with him, "I make love to the moon", he says. He threatens to disown the gods unless they destroy Rome, so that his reign will be remembered. Trying to stay alive is a game of wits, but trying to outwit a madman is difficult. The other person who defies him, and lives to tell the tale, is his cousin, played by Nicola Pagett. When he tells her she must marry Claudius, she refuses to go along with his game.  More >

He plans an acting competitign, the person who wins gets milligns, everyone else dies. But things don't turn out quite the way he plans them.
