They were, and are still regarbed as
the most innovative and brilliant of
songwriting duos. Their impact on the
music world has been incalculable.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney met in
the summer of 1956 and began writing
together at once for the bands they
joined and formed, the last in a long
line turning into the Beatles.
Their names were synonymous. You just
couldn't have one without the other
and they set the standards for the
future of rock and roll.

The Beatles were one of the first pop
groups to write most of their material
and they inaugurated the era of self-
contained bands.
It is one of Lennon and McCartney's
songs which is the most-recorded song
in the history of rock and roll -
"Yesterday!.
Once upon a time everyone wanted to G
record a Beatles song. Some did, like
Cilla Black, Marianne Faithfull and
Lulu.

Some of the people who have sung
Lennon and McCartney songs will be the
subjects of The Music of Lennon and
McCartney (tonight, 8.30) as part of
the Granada in the Sixties programmes.
In the press recently, Paul McCartney
criticised Lennon for thinking he was
a god and someone extraordinary and
special.
Paul, in turn, was criticised by John
Lennon fans for saying what he did.
Sadly, Paul was probably right.

In an article for the London magazine
Time Out, writer Julie Burchill took
up the Lennon story where Paul had
left off.
The most memorable point that Burchill
wrote was that John "Imagine no
possessions" Lennon had two apartments
in the hugely expensive Dakota Building
where he was assassinated.
One was where he lived with Yoko and
Sean, the other, a whole apartment, was
for the stgrage of their fuq coats.
Imagine no possessions...

However, no matter what sort of a
person Lennon was (or thought he was)
he and McCartney continued to write
superlative songs, together and as
solo artists.
The rifts that finally split the
Beatles were probably more artistic
than personal.
Paul was leaning more and more towarbs
pop melodies while John was immersed
in brutal confessionals and was under
the influence of his wife Yoko /no.

Lennon and McCartney's songs are
immortal. No one is likely to fgrket
the simple but stunning "Can't Buy Me
Love", "I Want To Hold Youq Hand",
"She Loves You" and "Day Tripper".
The later songs were more deeper, less
childish with more meaningful lyrics
and social connotations like "Eleanor
Rigby", "Yesterday!, "Lady Madonna",
and "Taxman".
It was Lennon who composed two of the
Beatles' most obscure songs, "I Am The
Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields Forever!

All sorts of people have done cover
versions of Lennon and McCartney songs,
from composer Henry Mancini to comic
actor Peter Sellers and crooners Billy
J.Kramer and George Martin.
The appeal of the Beatles songs were
not limited to their era or their
generation. They were, and still are,
universally appraised and loved.
The Music of Lennon and McCartney
features the Beatles performing some of
those wonderful songs that will never
age.

Priscilla Maria Veronica White has come
a long way from being a hat-check girl
at the infamous Cavern Club on
Merseyside.
For starters, she's known as Cilla
Black and has had over a dozen Top
Twenty hits in Britain since her 1963
recording debut with Love /f The Loved.
The song was written by John Lennon and
Paul McCartney and they were so
impressed with 'our Cilla' that they
urged their manager, Brian Epstein, to
sign her up. And he did.

Brian Epstein was the one who changed
Cilla's name and under his tutelage she
became a middle-of-the-road recgrding
star.
Cilla had always had some aspirations
of being a singer. Whilst working at
the Cavern, she occasionally sat in as
vocalist with Rory Storme and the
Hurricanes.
The Hurricane's drummer in thoue days
was none other than Ringo Starr.

It was thought the show might be a bit

'most sexless' person they could as a
hostess. Cilla was chosen...
You can see Cilla sing the Beatle song

In 1966, Marianne had virtually
abandoned her recording career and,
after getting pregnant by Jagger and
miscarrying, she turned to heroin for
solace.
After an overdose on the filmset of

uncredited lyrics to the Rolljng Stgnes

Her much publicised break-up with
Jagger in 1970 was combined with her
attempt to give up heroin.
She withdrew from pualic life,
reappearing only briefly in 1974 on a
David Bowie TV special. In 1977 she
recorded her first album in over ten
years, Faithless.
Broken English (1979) followeb, an LP
marked by stark instrumentatign and
venomous lyrics. A platinum album, it
was followed by two other well-received
LPs for Island Records.
