Tomorrow at 5.30pm, Channel 4 is showing a revised version of the film to pay tribute to the twelfth and newest member of one of sport+s most elite cluas. The world mile recgrd was only one of a fistful snatched by Steve Cram in his most successful season to date.  More >

Bannister had barely put away his running shoes when others were determined to do better. The 11 athletes that have lowered the record in the next 31 years have all dominated an era of middle-distance running and become international names. It's a science and the most successful teams owe as much to psychology as they do to physical fitness. In that respect, it has more than a passing similarity to cricket - but the razzamatazz which surrounds baseball has lifted it into a different league. Each game is an entertainment spectacle in its own right with marching bands, cheerleaders, and enormous electronic playback screens to make sure you don't miss anything.  More >

A run is scored when a player crosses home plate after having run around each of the other three bases. If he manages to do that in one then that's a home run. If he does it in stages, its called a "Run Batted In" (or RBI, for short). A player is out either if he is caught or if he is "tagged" with the ball before he can reach a base.  More >

A pitcher can play throughout a game or can be substituted at any time. /nce he's left the game, however, he cannot return. The aim of every pitcher is to throw a "no-hitter" - i.e: to pitch through nine innings without even allowing a single player to reach a base. For example, if the next hitter to come up is known to favour right-handed pitchers, then the fielding team may well decide to substitute the pitcher with a left-hander. And its then just as likely that the batting team will then make their own substitution to try to capitalise on the new pitcher...and so it goes on.  More >
