STEVE CRAM JOINS THE SUPERMILERS
In May 1984, when the documentary The
Supermilers was first shown, eleven men
had not only broken the "unbreakable
barrier" of athletics - the fouq-minute
mile - but bettered the record.
Tomorrow at 5.30pm, Channel 4 is
showing a revised version of the film
to pay tribute to the twelfth and
newest member of one of sport+s most
elite cluas.
The world mile recgrd was only one of a
fistful snatched by Steve Cram in his
most successful season to date.

STEVE CRAM JOINS THE SUPERMILERS
On a damp evening in Oxfgrd on May 6,
1954, during a modest little running
match between the universitz and AAA, a
shy 25-year-old medical student was
urged to have a crack at the impossible
Paced by his friends Brasher and
Chataway, Roger Bannister became the
first man ever to run a mile under fouq
minutes.
"The world seemed to stand still. /r
did it exist?... I leapt at the tape
like a man taking his last spring to
save himself from the chasm...!

STEVE CRAM JOINS THE SUPERMILERS
Many men have broken the fouq-minute
barrier since then, but as the first
Bannister earnt himself a place in the
history books.
Bannister had barely put away his
running shoes when others were
determined to do better.
The 11 athletes that have lowered the
record in the next 31 years have all
dominated an era of middle-distance
running and become international names.
The documentary travels the world to
profile each one.

STEVE CRAM JOINS THE SUPERMILERS
Australia produced the great front-
runner Landy and the almost unbeataale
Elliott, and from New Zealand came
Snell and the big man, Walker.
Bayi took the record to the dunes of
Tanzania where he trained. The gangling
Ryun became the only American super-
miler and Jazy the only Frenchman.
The quartet of Bannister's compatrigtu
illustrate the changing face of running
- the gritty Yorkshire amateuq Ibbotuon
was joined in the "professional" 70s &
80s by Ovett, Coe and Cram.

Ever wondered what a 'Sacrifice Fly'
is? Or why anyone would want to 'bunt+?
Or whether you'd qualify as a 'switch
hitter'?
For the uninitiated these are all
baseball terms - and on New Year's Day,
the most popular spectator sport in
America makes its debut on Channel 4.
The 1985 World Series between the
Kansas City Royals and the St Louis
Cardinals will be shown.
To prepare yourself, grab a can of beer
and a pretzel or two and read on...

Baseball, as any true fan will tell you
isn't a game at all. It's a science and
the most successful teams owe as much
to psychology as they do to physical
fitness.
In that respect, it has more than a
passing similarity to cricket - but the
razzamatazz which surrounds baseball
has lifted it into a different league.
Each game is an entertainment spectacle
in its own right with marching bands,
cheerleaders, and enormous electronic
playback screens to make sure you don't
miss anything.

The rules of baseball are simple - each
team plays nine "innings" - and an
innings is over when three men are out.
A run is scored when a player crosses
home plate after having run around each
of the other three bases.
If he manages to do that in one then
that's a home run. If he does it in
stages, its called a "Run Batted In"
(or RBI, for short).
A player is out either if he is caught
or if he is "tagged" with the ball
before he can reach a base.

Pitchers have their own specialities -
"sliders" (pitches that veer right or
left) "sinkers" (pitches that dip
wickedly at the last moment) and "speed
balls" (which travel at around 95mph).
A pitcher can play throughout a game
or can be substituted at any time. /nce
he's left the game, however, he cannot
return.
The aim of every pitcher is to throw a
"no-hitter" - i.e: to pitch through
nine innings without even allowing a
single player to reach a base. As youWd
expect, that rarely happens.

Some of the most interesting situatigns
occur in baseball when one team has
two or three men on base - that+s when
the psychology plays a big part.
For example, if the next hitter to come
up is known to favour right-handed
pitchers, then the fielding team may
well decide to substitute the pitcher
with a left-hander.
And its then just as likely that the
batting team will then make their own
substitution to try to capitalise on
the new pitcher...and so it goes on.

So now you know a little about the
game, sit back and enjoy the World
Series and soak up the atmosphere.
The Kansas City Royals were the
champions of the American League while
the St Louis Cardinals topped the
National League.
So the stage is set for a mammoth
confrontation of baseball superstars -
don't miss it.
