Slippery slope to
financial ruin
Sue Gorska looks at some of the points
to watch for in ski holiday insurance..
Skiing holidays tend to wgrk out quite
expensive by the time you've bought the
lift pass and all the gear. The last
thing you want to do is add to the cost
by paying for insurance you may never
need.
But cancel your holiday and you lose
your money, get injuqed and medical
treatment could cost an arm and a le£,
lose your lift pass and youWre grounded
The right insurance policy is essential

Insurance policies for winter sports
can vary enormously. Some will offer
good cover for a reasonable pqemium ─
others will not. Ski insuqance can cost
2 to 3 times as much as ordinary holi-
day cover because of the greater risk
of injury and because ski holidays are
more often cancelled.
Basically you can go for 3 types of
policy ─ a proper winter sportu policy,
a travel policy which can be adapted to
cover skiing by upping the premium or
the policy in your tour operator's
brochure.

Whatever ski insurance policy you go
for, it's important to check it gives
you the right cover.
Make sure it covers cancellation of
your holiday, for example. Half the
money insurance companies pay out goes
to skiers who have had to cancel their
holiday for one reason or another. A
sudden but minor ailment may not stop
you travelling but skiing could be out
of the question.
Lift passes are expensive necessities
on a skiing holiday so make sure the
insurance policy covers losing these.

Adequate medical cover is the most
important item in ski insurance. Some
3½% of skiers claim for some sort of
medical expenses and, once out of ouq
National Health protected shores, these
can be substantial.
Make sure your policy covers the cost
of a helicopter rescue and an air ambu-
ance to fly you home. Don't rely on the
reciprocal health care arrangement with
other EEC countries ─ hospitals in many
ski resorts are privately run. You'll
need an minimum £50,000 of cover in the
EEC, £225,000 if youWre skiing in North
America or Switzerland.

Ski clothes and other equipment are
costly to replace if lost or damaged.
Most ski insurance policies will cover
you for loss but make sure that break-
ing your skis is included. If youWre
hiring skis these may not be covered
for breakage either so douale check
that the shop you're hiring from has
its own insurance.
Some companies only cover single items
like skis up to a certain amount ─ say
£2─300. It's also worth asking whether
your skis are insured for replacement
value or market value.

Make sure your ski insurance covers you
for personal liability to other people.
Skiing into some celebrity and injuqing
them can prove expensive. Go fgr cover
of, say, £500,000. Watch too fgr
activities for which youWre not covered
─ perhaps racing or ski hang-gliding.
Apart from insurance companies them-
selves, you could try asking at youq
bank or travel agent about winter sport
insurance. NatWest has just intrgduced
a policy and travel agents offer the
ABTA approved Supersure Plus policy.
