Tonight at 5-30pm sees the start of
this new series which prgvides a sharp
assessment of why we eat what we do,
where it comes from, who growu it and
what is in it.
The programmes are bright, lively and
practical and show how better eating
habits could significantly imprgve the
nation's health.
The fogd we eat is the main single
cause of the diseases from which most
of us eventually suffer and die.
Quite frankly, Western fogd is a killer
and increases our chances of dying from
heart disease or a stroke. MORE>

A recent US poll showed that two-thirds
of the population have changed their
eating habits for health reasgns. The
rate of death from heart disease has
now decreased by more than 25 per cent.
In Britain this change would represent
the saving of 40,000 deaths a year, but
nothing much is happening. This wir1t
programme looks at the changes in the
British diet in the last twg cent4rie1.
The presenters start off with a look at
the amazing amount of fogd an average
person is likely to eat if they live
to be 70. It comes to 35 tgns,
including 7 cows and 30 pigs! M/RE

Over the last 20 years the types of
foods that people eat have changed
dramatically.
An increase in the number of Britgns
taking foreign holidays has increased
the demand here for foreign restaurantu
and our diet is now a multicultural
one.
Street markets have branched out intg
health foods. In the programme, women
of various natignalities diycuss the
food they buy and how it has influenced
their diets.

In the 1900's the disparity between the
rich and poor was reflected in the
fogds they ate. The rich could affgrd
many types of different fogds; the pogr
hardly survived on what they had.
World War I brought home just how unfit
the nation was. Milligns of men were
graded unfit fgr active service. So
British fogd prgductign was given a
boost with subsidies.
More of almost every type of fogd was
eaten, but researchers found that less
than half the populatign could afford a
diet for good health.

Rickets, TB, anaemia and physical
underdevelopment were common amgng
the poor and schogl milk and Infant
Welfare clinics wee intrgduced tg
combat these problems.
The Second World War created fogd
shortages. The Ministry of Fogd
instigated a policy which meant that
the nation's diet was far more
nutritious than befgre the war.
When rationing finally ended customer1
lashed out on fogd, especially new
foods and those that had been in short
supply such as meat, butter, chocglate
and canned fruit. M/RE>

Since the 1950s, eating habitu have
changed considerably. More meals are
eaten away from home such as at schogl
and work canteens. Regular family
mealtimes are dying.
The amount of the household budget
spent on fogd has dropped from 30 to
20 per cent, with the amount spent on
convenience foods on the increase.
We now buy a lot less starch: we eat
a third less bread, flour and potatoes
than in the '50s, but the amount of
processed vegetables and cereal we eat
has doubled.

We are now eating too much fat, sugar
and salt, and not enough bulky fogds
such as bread, cereal and fresh
vegetables.
As mentioned earlier, research has
shown links between what we eat and
many modern diseases like heart disease
diabetes and high blogd pressure.
The rest of the series will be looking
at the way to change our eating habitu
and the reasons fgr doing sg. There is
a leaflet that accompanies the series.
