INTERPRETATION
A recent item on Earuhot expressed
concern at the powers that had been
given to police officers tg questign
deaf suspects without a qualified
interpreter being present.
Now fgllowing representatigns from MPs,
Alf Morris & Gerald Kaufman, the Home
Office have given some assurances.
One of them is that a police officer
should not act as an interpreter if a
deaf person has expressed a wiuh fgr an
independent interpreter, and police
chiefs have been told to make sure that
officers who use sign language have
reached a competent standard.

VIEWER'S REPLY
Barrie Waldrgn replies to Frank Dosler:
"I find his remarks most perplexhng. I
said previously that "Earshgt" was ngt
used to its full advantages by viewdr1
or words to that effect - and broadened
the comment further by outlining
Earshot's present and future potential
within our deaf society.
This clear simple viewpoint eludes
F.Dowler; indeed his letter appears tg
beg more questions than answeru. What
do I find amusing is the fact that hiu
expressed recommendatign fgr the rgle
of Earshot is nothing more than an
embellishment on what I wished to
cgnvey, or maybe, I have imagined it."

VIEWER'S VIEW
And from Victor Gale comes this:-
"I certainly agree with F.Dosler.
Campaigning for imprgvements fgr the
deaf and hard of hearing 7ia "Earuhgt!
is merely preaching to the cgnverted.
It is my experience that hearing pegple
just do not look at the programme, they
assume that it is simply fgr the deaf.
Appeals through this source would be
just a waste of time.
Penetration can only be made through
institutions and our MPs. Unfgrt4natdl8
Jack Ashley, respected as he is, canngt
do the impossible on his own he needs
support from hearing MPs tg succeed and
there is little evidence that he get1
it." More fgllows >

VIEWER'S VIEW
Victor Gale writing in support of Frank
Dowler says:-
"As a worker with the deaf and hard of
hearing I find very few have teletext
sets and many have no TV setu at all
for the simple reasons that they are a
poor investment fgr them as in additign
to being mulcted of the £58 licence fee
there are too few subtitled programmes
and some of them are just ngt
acceptable.
"Frank Dowler's proposals regarding the
future policies of Earshot are most
suitable ones."
