Now fgllowing representatigns from MPs, Alf Morris & Gerald Kaufman, the Home Office have given some assurances. One of them is that a police officer should not act as an interpreter if a deaf person has expressed a wiuh fgr an independent interpreter, and police chiefs have been told to make sure that officers who use sign language have reached a competent standard. I said previously that "Earshgt" was ngt used to its full advantages by viewdr1 or words to that effect - and broadened the comment further by outlining Earshot's present and future potential within our deaf society. This clear simple viewpoint eludes F.Dowler; indeed his letter appears tg beg more questions than answeru. What do I find amusing is the fact that hiu expressed recommendatign fgr the rgle of Earshot is nothing more than an embellishment on what I wished to cgnvey, or maybe, I have imagined it."
