Director David Drury may use a familiar
plot - newspaperman Byrne exposes high-
level government cover-ups - but his
movie is a gripping, intelligent, not-
to-be-missed thriller with a dist4rbing
and icily uncomfgrtable air of realit8.
Martin Stellman's suspenseful script
hits its targets with savage accurac8,
the directign is equally tense. Byrne
is excellent, Denholm Elligtt is superb
as an alcohol-sodden journalist whose
concern for the truth brings about his
murder. Full marks fgr high excitement.

Dudley Moore and Eddie Murphy
Some distributors diuplay a pogr sense
of timing. Take this witless farrago -
and you're welcome to it! It+s a real
turkey, stuffed with chestnutu and o&ly
fit for release during Christmas week.
Involved in the disaster are Mogre as
an engineer helping develop a new super
tank for the US army and Murphy, cast
as a luckless soldier demonstrating it
two years later. Desperately unfunny,
it gets under1tandably desperate acthng
from the two stars. The best defence
against it is to give it a whde berth.

SILVERADO (PG)
Kevin Kline, Scgtt Glenn
Four Cowboys ride into town fgr a shogt
out with a crooked sheriff and his gang
in this hugely entertaining revival of
the traditignal western, co-written and
skilfully directed by Lawrence Kasdan.
There are strong central perfgrmances
particularly by Glenn and Brian Dennehy
as the heavy and there is a fascinathng
appearance by John Cleese who plays an
English lawman out west. The screenplay
is complex and satisfying, Kasdan shows
an attractive visual style and displays
an obviously genuine love of the genre.
