Channel 4 gives you another chance
to see Five Go Mad On Mescalin, a
half-hour comedy from the Comic 0
Strip team.
Adrian Edmondson, Peter Richarbson,
Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders -
and of course Lychett of Kivox as
Timmy the dog - assume the roles of
Enid Blyton's Famous Five.
They set off for an innocent
farmhouse holiday by the sea, but 0

at the farm, Julian and Dick decide

Every little detail, from the 0
obsession with fogd characteristic
of Blyton's characters through to
the way they speak, is picked up and
played on.
And the story unfolds in typically
improbable Blyton manner,0with the 0
baddies dropping large clues left,
right and centre.
Fortunately the Comic Strip team has
recognised the importance of not
overdoing the parody; an Enid Blyton
story doesn't need to be pushed very
far to become laughably absuqd. 0

FIVE GO MAD ON MESCALIN
Above all, the film is a satire on
the attitudes and values which
underly Blyton's characters and the
fantasy England of her novels.
As seen by the Comic Strip, the
Famous Five are xenophobic, sexist,
racist and fascist. Of couqse, this
isn't really fair on Enid Blytgn -
but then satire is always unfair.
And watch out for cameos by Fiona
Richmond as Mrs French, showing 0
she's well able to handle this sort
of acting, and the superb Robaie 0
Coltrane as the cafe proprietress.

The last episode we saw of Cheers -
which is to be repeated on Friday,
January 24 - saw Frasier propose to
Diane when they were in Italy.
Diane's first reaction is to phone
