On Wednesday at 9.00pm here on Channel
4 you can see Good Climate, Friendly
Inhabitants, the second of five plays
dramatised from short stories by South
African writer Nadine Gordimer.
Most of Gordimer's work concerns the
political situation in her native land,
and she has been a leading activist
against apartheid and censoruhip.
Her collections of stories include The
Soft Voice of the Serpent (1953) and
Livingstone's Companions (1972). Her
novel, The Conservationist, was joint
winner of the Booker Prize in 1974.

In 1979, Nadine Gordimer wrgte Burger+s
Daughter which describes the personal
and political heritage of Rosa Buqger,
whose Communist father had died in
prison.
And, in 1981, she wrote July's People,
a novella set in the future, in which a
white family on the run from civil waq
find themselves dependent on their
black servant.
The theme is similar to that of Gogd
Climate, Friendly Inhabitants, in which
a lonely middle-aged woman is fgrced to
turn to her black colleagues for help.
