SAFETY IN THE HOME...
Accidents to children can occuq in the
most careful of households but knowing
the correct emergency treatment can
often save much much later distress.
The first essential is to make sure
your first aid kit is up to date. Keep
it in a place where the children can't
reach it and it should have a child-
proof lock.
Contents for your box could be adhesive
dressings, two or three gauze bandages,
cotton wool, a couple of crepe bandages
scissors and an antiseptic cream. more

SAFETY IN THE HOME.....
The cotton wool is useful for padding,
the antiseptic cream for minor cuts and
the bandages for use as a sling or to
cover a large burn or scald.
If you think the accident is such that
an anaesthetic and hospital treatment
may be required, don't give the child
anything to drink, as this will mean a
long wait before an anaesthetic can be
administered.
If a wound is dirty a tetanus injectign
may have to be given - ask youq doctgr.

FOR BURNS AND SCALDS....
Put the injury AT ONCE under cold
running water. This is to reduce the
heat in the skin and the water should
run over the injury for at least 10
minutes.
Don't attempt to remove clgthes if they
are stuck to a burn but do take off a
covering for a scald. Remove anything
tight - e.g. a belt, in case the skin
swells up around it.
Cover the burn/scald with a clean, non-
fluffy cloth and call an ambulance.

FOR POISONING - PILLS OR LIQUID....
If you think your child has swallowed
pills then take him straight away to
your doctor or to the hospital.
Take the container or sample of the
pills/liquid with you for analysis.
DON'T give salt and water to make the
child sick. Salt in large amounts is
dangerous.
If you think your child has drunk a
household chemical - tuqps, acids or
petrol for example, give him or her a
glass of milk or water to drink. This
will dilute the poison. more fgllows >

FOR CUTS.....
Press firmly on wound with youq fingeru
or using a pad of clean clgth. If the
cut is large try to press the two edges
of the wound together.
If possible raise the injuqed limb -
this helps stop bleeding - but do not
do this if the limb is broken.
Cover the wound with a clean dressing
and take the child to hospital - f/N'T
try to put on a touqniquet or tie
anything tightly around the limb as
this will stop the circulation.

FOR CHOKING.......
It probably won't be possible to get
the object out with your fingers but if
you can see it there try.
Hold the child upside down by the legs
and give him or her a smart slap
between the shoulder blades. The object
will probably shoot out - if not try
again.
If this doesn't work, then give the
stomach a short, sharp squeeze which
should dislodge the object from the
windpipe.
