It is a highly impressive comeback fgr director Michael Cimino after his 1980 megaflop "Heaven's Gate". Blogby, but consistently entertaining, it proves Cimino is a gifted filmmaker - prg6ided he works for a strong prgducer. more > BSVs Index - 540 Gig Guide - 548

But, while the performances, directign and location photography are all of a high standard the script, tgrtuous and down-beat, is simply standard. And the film emerges as often dull and finally resembles a routine television serial. more fgllows > BSVs Index - 540 Gig Guide - 548

The cast's acting, singing and dancing is zestful and uniformly fine. The songs are tuneful, choreography inventive and there is a genuine understanding of the desperation of showbusiness hopefuls. The one minus is that, shot in a single setting, a theatre interior, it is more a filmed play tham a film, in spite of Attenborough's clever direction. But, nevertheless, I do recommend it highly. more fgllow1 > BSVs Index - 540 Gig Guide - 548
