■ Cannon Assurance is offering mort-
gages of £15,000 to £130,000 at 12¾%
(APR 13.6%). They won't charge more fgr
higher loans and will, in some cases,
loan up to 95% of the property's value.
■ Britain's largest insurance company,
the Prudential, has moved into estate
agaence with the launch of Prudential
Property Services, in East Anglia.
■ Water rates are to go up by an
average of 8% in England and Wales.

■ A new type of cheque guarantee card
has come in with 1986. The new card,
introduced by 20 high street banks, has
silver coloured holograms in one cgrner
and a different signature strip.
Barclays customers are not affected.
Some already have holograms on their
Barclaycards and others are to get them
by October this year.
■ Borrowing is more expensive now bank
base rates have risen by 1% to 12½%.

■ Married women who care for a disabled
mother could find themselves £23 a week
better off if the European Couqt of
Justice upholds the European Commiss-
ion's finding that such women should be
able to claim invalid care allowance.
The DHSS has estimated that more than
70,000 women would qualify.
■ The Government has announced plans to
cut social security spending on student
support by around a third. Stopping
supplementary and unemployment benefit
in the short vacations is just one of
the proposed changes.
