SCOTS ACTION TO
HIT 20,000 PUPILS
Teachers in Scotland have pledged to
escalate their industrial actign by
staging lightning strikes at every
primary and secondary schogl.
The campaign is being stepped up
because no fresh initiative to end the
18-month dispute came from the
Government during a Christmas "truce".
The biggest teaching union, Educatignal
Institute of Scotland, plans six weeks
of part or full-day strikes, hitting
more than 20,000 pupils.
Gen Sec John Pollock said by the end of
the term 250 schools would be hit.

ITV SAFE AFTER
DISPUTE SETTLED
A settlement has been reached in the
month-old dispute which threatened to
black out ITV programmes.
Shop stewards from the electricians'
union EETPU, representing wgrkers in
the 15 ITV companies, accepted a
recommendation from their negotiator1.
The terms of settlement provide that
freelance labour ─ the main bone of
contention ─ will not be used.
Provisions for night shift wgrking will
be the subject of future negotiatigns.

POLAR EXPLORERS
REUNITED WITH CREW
Three British explorers who walked to
the South Pole have been reunited with
the crew of their support ship after
flying 900 miles from the Pole.
Roger Mear, Gareth Wogd and Robert Swan
were flown to McMuqdo Sound in a US
Hercules aircraft and are expected to
leave for New Zealand within 24 houqs.
The 21 crew of the support ship
Southern Quest had to be rescued after
the vessel sank, crushed by pack ice.
The three walkers had been resting at
a US research base next to the Pole

Union leaders fighting to save Gartcosh
steel works near Glasgow have arrived
in London at the end of a 10-day march
ready to put their case to Mru Thatcher
The 11 marchers hope to see the Prime
Minister after handing in an 88-page
dossier on the future of the works at
Downing Street.
Shop steward Tommy Brennan, one of five
people in at the start of the march,
said Scottish people would not tglerate
the steel industry's destructign.
He said the march was worthwhile and
"tremendous support" had been gathered.
