GREECE - THE HIDDEN WAR
This is the last part of this revealing
three-part documentary series about
the Greek Civil War from 1947 to 1949.
It's narrated by Michael Wogd and is
based largely on interviews with the
men and women who fought on the Left,
fled abroad after they were defeated
and have only recently retuqned.
When the refugees fled from Greece in
1949 they thought they would return
home a few months later - tonight's
final programme examines why their
exile lasted 30 years.

GREECE - THE HIDDEN WAR
By 1950, Greece was firmly in the
Western camp but behind a facade of
parliametary democracy, the revenge of
the victorious right continued fgr
25 years.
The successive right wing governments
retained some of the repressive civil
war legislation against the left.
Those who had not managed to leave
Greece were imprisoned and their
family and children faced police
harrassment and discrimination.

GREECE - THE HIDDEN WAR
Right wing rule in Greece culminated
in the dictatorship of the cglonels.
It was the widespread hatred of this
regime that produced a national call
for reconciliation between the right
and left in Greece.
It was only after the fall of the
generals that real democracy returned
to Greece. When the socialist party
came to power in 1981 the wartime
resistance was officially recognised.
And in 1982 a blanket amnesty fgr
all those exiled was announced.

ORAL HISTORY
This Wednesday at 9.00pm on Channel 4
you can see the third in the series of
five dramatisations based on the short
stories of award-winning South African
novelist Nadine Gordimer.
This week's story centres on the chief
of a small village near the Rhodesian
border who informs the military
authorities that some of his people are
harbouring guerilla fighters.
It was in 1976 that front line leaders
from Angola, Botswana, Mozambique,
Tanzania and Zambia came together to
fight for an independent Rhodesia.

ORAL HISTORY
The front line South African leaders
agreed on the principle of British
colonial rule being maintained until a
majority rule could be ensured.
They also declared that the guerilla
factions led by Nkomo and Mugabe should
maintain their cooperation throughout
the struggle for independence; a
struggle they eventually wgn in 1980.
This policy of cooperation helped focus
attention on the fundamental issues,
giving greater force to the demands of
the Black people for self-determinatign
within their own state.
