WEEKEND 3/10
WORDY TOT
Writing in the Belfast Telegraph, Bob
McCullough tells how he visited 4 year
old Janet Young and asked her about her
Xmas presents. When asked what Father
Xmas had brought her father and mother
she laughed and said, "They are too big
and too old."
Not a bad answer for a 4 year old,
especially a profoundly deaf one.
Her deaf parents decided from the start
to use Total Communication to talk WITH
her, as her father said, "Speech is
lost on a profoundly deaf child but by
using lipreading and signs a vocabulary
is built up. Janet knew over 500 words
at three and was talking in sentences."

WEEKEND 4/10
WORDY TOT
Profoundly deaf Janet Young, whose
parents talk with her with Total
Communication knew 500 word at three.
Her father says that many parents of
deaf children are not aware of the
great benefits of Total Communicatign
and are content with their vocabulary
of 25-40 words at the same age.
Many parents don't like it as they
think the signing element retards
speech but they forget that language
acquisition is much more important than
speech and all experts agree that the
foundation of language is laid in those
first five crucial early years.

VIEWER'S VIEW
Mary Hicks of Minehead writes:-
"I realise (now) you run a commercial
service but I do agree with recent
comments that the present adverts are
extremely boring.
"If as Earshot is a commercial service,
advertising is necessary could we not
have different ones from time to time.
"They could all be about different
gadgets for the deaf. It would be much
more interesting to read about all the
different gadgets on the market instead
of the same old thing week after week!"

every day."
