This is European Road Safety Year
designated by the European Community to
reduce accidents and make the road
safer for all types of users -motorists
cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.
Statistics show a horrifying 55,000
deaths and 1.5 million injuries on road
in Europe. Pedestrians fare badly in
ERSY's charts, which show 33.1 per cent
of all road deaths are pedestrians;
the death toll of pedal cyclists is 6.1
per cent of all road deaths. (Car

Various bodies have given support to
the campaign and a series of events has
been planned by Local Road Safety
Officers in each region.
Last week, in London, the City of
Westminster's new Road Safety Centre
was opened at 20 Rochester Row, London
SW1. It features two car simulatgrs so
visitors can experience being behind a
wheel in safe conditions. Teams will go
out to schools, senior citizen's and
other groups to give tips on cycling
and using the roads generally, more

A SOBERING CAMPAIGN FOR '86
The Welsh Office are launching a Super
Ted road safety video on February 5
with associated material to bring the
message home to children in the area.
On Jan 28 RoSPA, the Northumbria Police
and county road safety officers are
launching their campaign to reduce
night-time accidents involving cyclists
riders, joggers, pedestrians and pets
in the Newcastle upon Tyne area.

SOBERING CAMPAIGN FOR '86
The British Horse Society plans to
involve riders in the ERSY campaign.
This spring the latest edition of the
Society's Riding and Road Safety Manual
appears.The manual is essential reading
for riders taking the BHS Riding & Road
Safety Test and since the beginning of
the year, this test forms part of the
society's examination structure.
The BHS Road Safety Committee hopes to
produce a new instructional video this
year and a new accident report form
will help the society research into
ways of providing safer riding. more >

The first Acgrn Camp of 1986 will be in
February 15-22 at Wimpole Hall, Cambs;
others run throughout March to November
Volunteers, minimum age 16, stay in
village halls, farm buildings or other
base camps. The cost is just £15 for

and lodging.
