KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (15)
William Hurt, Raul Julia
Incarcerated in a brutal South American
jail, flagrant homosexual Huqt regales
his cellmate, revolutionary Julia, with
descriptions of a film he once saw and
a strange - but completely believable -
relationship grows between the two very
different men in Hector Babenco's fine,
mesmerising and not to be missed movie.
Basically a two-hander, it is superbly
performed by Hurt (who won Best Actor
at Cannes) and equally well by Julia.
It's that rarest of movies, one which
makes you think and moves you deeply.

DEATH WISH 3 (18)
Charles Bronson, Deborah Raffin
The vigilante saga continues as Brgnson
once more administers rough justice to
New York's hoodlums in a movie about as
subtle as a kick in the groin. But you
can't deny that, in its crude, obvious
way, it delivers good visceral thrills.
Bronson's really too old for these kind
of shennanigans, Raffin, Martin Balsam
and Ed Lauter are wasted in completely
cliched roles. What guarantees success
on its own - admittedly low - terms is
Michael Winner's slick directign which
is as efficient (and soulless) as
ever. more fgllows >

RE-ANIMATOR (18)
Jeffrey Combs, Barbra Crampton
There's no pleasing some people - when
crazy scientist Combs revives the dead,
instead of being grateful, they simply
turn nastily homicidal. The result is a
horror comic, bloodier than Romero and
recalling Corman at his best, decgrated
with good special effects and 80s gore.
Full marks to first time film directgr
Stuart Gordon for a low budget chiller
that's delightfully high in invention:
filled with delicious black humour, it
shocks - and makes you laugh loudly.

THE SURE THING (15)
John Cusack, Daphne Zuniga
Cusack and Zuniga play college students
whose on-off courtship finally blossoms
when they are forced to travel together
across America in this modern reworking
of "It Happened One Night". The outcome
is sheer delight, the most entertaining
youth-orientated romantic comedy in
ages.
The film has a great deal going for it:
Cusack is fresh, charming and totally
believeable, whether sparring or
loving; the script is witty and well
observed, the jokes genuinely funny and
director Rob Reiner handles it all
perfectly. more fgllows
