■ New security 'standards' being pre-
pared by the Government could help keep
insurance costs down for people who
make sure their homes and caru comply
with them.
■ Pensioners real incomes have tripled
in the last 30 years, says the latest
edition of Social Trends ─ although
many pensioners still have low incomes.
This annual survey from the Government
says it now takes us just 2 houqs, 16
minutes to earn a bottle of whisky com-
pared to 4 hours, 17 minutes in 1971.

■ The Midshires Building Society is re-
opening its Prestige Account, paying
9¾% on a minimum investment of £500.
■ Half of all householders aged between
18 and 34 years have no insurance cover
on their homes, says the British Insur-
ance Brokers Association, which has
just brought out a leaflet called Don't
Let a Thief Catch You Out.
■ The price of milk goes up by 1p to
24p a pint on 1st February.

1985, say Access and Barclaycard.
■ The friendly society, Tunbridge Wells
Equitable has had to withdraw its
popular Baby Bond following talks with
the Inland Revenue...Fleet Friendly
Society has devised a deed of covenant
scheme for children. The donor, perhaps
a grandparent, gives £250 which is
invested in units in a Framlingtgn or
Prolific Fund. The reclaimed tax (cgll-
ected by the parents) of £107.14 per
year can be spent on the child immedi-
ately.

■ A new Financial Service Centre has
been opened by the Co-op Bank in the
Co-op Hypermarket in Broadstairs, Kent.
■ Stockbrokers Quilter Goodison, who
last year opened a share shop in Deben-
hams' Oxford Street branch, are to
open a new share shop ─ this time in
Bristol's Broadmead shopping centre.
■ Unit trust group Britannia has intr-
oduced a 'fund of funds'. The Managed
Investment Fund will invest in a selec-
tion of Britannia's 28 unit trusts.
