A BRAND
NEW POP
QUIZ SHOW!

It's a sorry state of affairs when a
pop quiz show has to fall back on
ageing DJ's and would-be stars as its
guests.
Pop The Question, hosted by Lee Peck,
on C4 on Tuesdays at 6pm, is a mish-
mash of ancient has-beens trying hard
to be hip and cool - even though 80%
of the questions are 20 years old.
This week's guests have hardly set the
pop charts alight - they include Tommy
Boyd, Madeline Bell, Neil Innes and
Leni Harper.

Lee Peck, in a moment of wit, describes
David Hamilton as "a man more brilliant
than a 50-watt light bulb" and says
that Chris Tarrant has "the film star
looks of E.T."
A bit cruel, but very true.
Sadly, there are too few clips on Pop
The Question - this week you've got a
chance to see The Hollies (60 seconds
of them is better than half an hour of
Hamilton et al) and The Swingin' Blue
Jeans.

The clip of The Hollies (who amazingly
only had one number one hit here) shows
them singing 'Just One Look'.
The Swingin' Blue Jeans, a very Sixties
sort of band, give a superb rendition
of 'Good Golly Miss Molly' sounding and
looking just like the Beatles.
In between all of this excitement,
there are some pretty clever and
obscure connection clues to be worked
out - but so few of them are related to
70s or 80s music.

In every show like this, there is
always one person who makes an
unforgiveable howler, and it's David
Hamilton's turn this week.
A send-up of the Elton John/Kiki Dee
song "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was
played and the question asked, who
were the original singers?
Full of confidence, David announces
the original artists were John Travolta
and Olivia Newton-John - he was VERY
surprised when he found out the right
answer...

The difference between Pop The
Question and the BBC's Pop Quiz is
that the latter makes a joke out of
the former.
Cetainly some might argue they are fed
up with pompous pop stars thinking
they know everything, but at least they
are more interesting than a bunch of
old fogies who know nothing.
Nothing about the contemporary music
scene, but an awful lgt about Brenda
Lee, Vince Hill and Mike Berry...

The best thing that can be said about
Pop The Question (Channel 4, Tuesdays
at 6pm) are the connection clues.
What has Vince Hill got to do with
'The Sound of Music' and what has Girly
Slade got to do with 'Mama We're All
Crazee Now'? Watch on Tuesday, find out
and be truly amazed.
If only they could invite some real pop
stars on, if only they could ask
questions people under the age of 20
can answer..if only, if only...
