3 WOMEN
Channel 4 presents the British TV
premiere of Robert Altman's haunting,
powerful drama. It's a rivetjng study
of psychological dependence and the
takeover of one character by another.
The three women are played by Shelley
Duvall, as an empty-headed chatterbox,
Sissy Spacek as a young, innocent
country girl and Janice Rule, pregnant
and married to an ex-stuntman.
Spacek is the new girl in town and
moves in with Duvall whom she hero-
worships.

3 WOMEN
Duvall is superb as an endless
chatterbox, ignored by everyaody,
especially the men she wants to notice
her. It's really quite sad because
she's harmless - just talkative.
Sissy Spacek is in yet another of her
weird teenage roles as the young girl
who idolises Duvall, imitating the
way she dresses, acts and eventually
losing her own identity.
The film is a superb mix of brilliant
acting and marvelous, surreal
photography.

3 WOMEN
Janice Rule, whose husband has flings
with both Duvall and Spacek, hardly
speaks but conveys all her thoughts
and feelings through huge, striking
murals.
These murals are surreal, frightening
reflections of her husband's
infidelity, the growing relationship
between the women, and her feelings
towards her pregnancy.
"As always in an Altman film, the
performances are brilliant", said the
Hollywogd Reporter.

3 WOMEN
Altman's direction is similar to
Ingmar Bergman's with its dream-like
surreal images, and soft focus
lighting.
The womens' experiences and feelings
reflect those of women universally -
their struggle to be independant, yet
at the same time wanting the somewhat
dubious security of marriage.
But it is the women, as always, who
come through for each other in the end,
who support and care about each other.

REVIEW
3 WOMEN
Altman said of the film "I am taking
three different women who are actually
all the same, or who could be the same
woman at different stages of her life".
The music by Gerald Busby, is weird
and eerie - making one almost expect
a psychological horror movie. It
effectively emphasises the womens'
allusive, emotional environment.
3 Women is a compelling, thought-
provoking film - don't miss it. You can
see it at 9pm tomorrow.

MOUCHETTE
If you're feeling even the slightest
bit depressed then don't watch
tonight's Eleventh Hour film,
Mouchette.
Shot in black and white just to add to
the gloom, it's the story of a sullen
French schoolgirl whose moods are
brought on by a cruel peasant father
and a sick alcoholic mother.
Nadine Nortier is perfect as the darkly
silent 14-year-old who accepts the
beatings and the life of drudgery with
forlorn strength.

MOUCHETTE
Mouchette is not allowed to talk to
boys, her classmates ignore her so she
resorts to throwing mud at them and her
homelife is spent doing everything her
mother should be doing.
In the small village where Mouchette
lives, there are two men in love with
the blonde barmaid, who seems to keep
on pouring liquor from the same bottle.
The rivalry between these two men is
to lead to disaster for the
unfortunate Mouchette.

MOUCHETTE
Young Mouchette is caught in a vicious
circle. As long as her mother remains
alcoholic and sick, Mouchette cannot
talk to her and relieve her burdens.
And the burdens multiply: her father's
maltreatment, the loneliness of school
and her encounter in the woods with
Monsieur Arsene, the poacher in love
with the barmaid.
Mouchette witnesses the struggle
between Arsene and his rival, the
game-keeper Mathieu, and later is found
sheltering from the rain by Arsene.

REVIEW
MOUCHETTE
Arsene, another alcoholic, thinks he
has killed Mathieu and makes Mouchette
his alibi.
Mouchette is eager to help: this is her
act of defiance. She hates everyone and
this is a good a way as any to revenge.
But Arsene's fear and his drunkenness
bring on a vicious attack of epilepsy
and he finds Mouchette's tenderness too
much - with tragic consequences....
Mouchette is a depressing film which
never raises its head from the depths
of human suffering.
