It's a rivetjng study of psychological dependence and the takeover of one character by another. The three women are played by Shelley Duvall, as an empty-headed chatterbox, Sissy Spacek as a young, innocent country girl and Janice Rule, pregnant and married to an ex-stuntman. Spacek is the new girl in town and moves in with Duvall whom she hero- worships.  More...

It's really quite sad because she's harmless - just talkative. Sissy Spacek is in yet another of her weird teenage roles as the young girl who idolises Duvall, imitating the way she dresses, acts and eventually losing her own identity. The film is a superb mix of brilliant acting and marvelous, surreal photography.  More...

The womens' experiences and feelings reflect those of women universally - their struggle to be independant, yet at the same time wanting the somewhat dubious security of marriage. But it is the women, as always, who come through for each other in the end, who support and care about each other.  More...

The music by Gerald Busby, is weird and eerie - making one almost expect a psychological horror movie. Shot in black and white just to add to the gloom, it's the story of a sullen French schoolgirl whose moods are brought on by a cruel peasant father and a sick alcoholic mother. Nadine Nortier is perfect as the darkly silent 14-year-old who accepts the beatings and the life of drudgery with forlorn strength.  More...

In the small village where Mouchette lives, there are two men in love with the blonde barmaid, who seems to keep on pouring liquor from the same bottle. The rivalry between these two men is to lead to disaster for the unfortunate Mouchette.  More...

As long as her mother remains alcoholic and sick, Mouchette cannot talk to her and relieve her burdens. And the burdens multiply: her father's maltreatment, the loneliness of school and her encounter in the woods with Monsieur Arsene, the poacher in love with the barmaid. Mouchette witnesses the struggle between Arsene and his rival, the game-keeper Mathieu, and later is found sheltering from the rain by Arsene.  More...

Mouchette is eager to help: this is her act of defiance. She hates everyone and this is a good a way as any to revenge. But Arsene's fear and his drunkenness bring on a vicious attack of epilepsy and he finds Mouchette's tenderness too much - with tragic consequences.... Mouchette is a depressing film which never raises its head from the depths of human suffering.  by Barbara Jefferson
