CHIP OF GLASS RUBY
This Wednesday at 9.00pm, Channel 4
continues the current series of repeat
showings of films based on short
stories by the award-winning South
African novelist Nadine Gordimer.
Chip Of Glass Ruby centres on an
Indian family living in a small house
in a district of Johannesberg which is
being cleared of 'coloureds'.
Yusuf Bhamjee is a greengrocer who
sells his fruit and veg from the back
of his lorry. Politically
unsophisticated, his priorities are
firmly with his family.

Jimmy, Mr Bhamjee's fifteen-year-old
son, is fired with a revolutionary
fervour that his father initially
interprets simply as lack of respect.
The heroine of the tale, however, is
Mrs Bhamjee, an 'ordinary housewife'
who occupies a ground somewhere between
her husband and her son.
Although far from radical, Mrs Bhamjee
is impelled by a deep sense of
compassion for the victims of South
African injustice to involve herself in
peaceful political activity.

Working for the rights of blacks and
Asians, Mrs Bhamjee actively supports
various organisations.
When a hand-operated printing machine
is delivered to the house, Mrs Bhamjee
spends much of her 'spare' time
laboriously turning out samizdat
leaflets.
Yusuf, her husband, cannot understand
her involvement: all he can see is that
they are in a precarious position and
should direct their energies towards
doing the best they can for themselves.

When Yusuf tells his wife to leave such
activities to the blacks, his son
replies: "We're also black"; but Yusuf
does not understand.
Afraid of the consequences, he asks his
wife: "Who will make a noise and throw
stones when you and your children are
without a roof? Are your black friends
going give you a place to sleep?"
In the end, of course, Mrs Bhamjee is
bound to be found out. Late one night
the police appear, turn the house
upside down and take her away....

CHIP OF GLASS RUBY
The film derives much of its emotional
power from the simplicity of the story
and its understated tgne.
And its concentration on the personal
problems of one family give it a tragic
depth lacking in more generalised
polemical works.
It brings the human tragedy of the
South African system vividly alive.
This is why such a system is evil and
why it must be destroyed.
You can see Chip Of Glass Ruby this
Wednesday at 9.00pm.
