SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
1st Quarter
The match got off to a sensational
start when Walter Payton fumbled the
ball on the Bears' second offensive
play and Tony Franklin notched a 36-
yard field goal for the Patriots.
In the next series, Chicago levelled
with a 28-yard field goal by Kevin
Butler, laid on by McMahon's 43-yard
pass to Willie Gault.
Chicago took the lead for the first
time after 13 minutes with a secgnd
Butler field goal from 24 yards.

SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
1st Quarter
After some fairly even early exchanges
the Bears suddenly ran up a 10-point
lead in the space of three minutes.
Mike Singletary recovered a fumble for
the Bears on the Patriots' 12-yard line
and Matt Suhey forced his way over for
the first touchdown of the game.
Butler added the extra point and at the
end of the first quarter Chicago looked
well in control with their defense
giving Eason and Co a torrid time.

SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
2nd Quarter
The Bears' defense continued to keep
incredible pressure on Eason - who
looked increasingly unhappy.
McMahon, on the other hand, appeared
to be growing in confidence and hit
Suhey with a 35-yard pass to put the
Bears within range of another TD.
On the next play, McMahon himself ran
in a touchdown from 3 yards and Butler
added the extra point to stretch the
Bears' lead to 20-3.

SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
2nd Quarter
Towards the end of the second quarter
the Patriots substituted Steve Grogan
for Eason at quarterback and it
quickly paid dividends with the Pats'
first first down on two quick passes.
However, Chicago weathered that short
storm and as the first half drew to a
close, they were back on the offensive.
In the last minute of the half, Kevin
Butler scored his third field goal for
the Bears to make the half-time score
23-3.

SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
3rd Quarter
The Bears' defense started the second
half by sacking Patriots' QB Grogan
twice in the first minute.
McMahon followed that up with a 59-yard
pass to Willie Gault and but for a fine
tackle by Fred Marion, the Chicago man
would have gone all the way for a TD.
Five plays later, McMahon ran it home
from a yard and Butler converted to
make the score 30-3. The Bears had gone
96 yards for the score.

SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
3rd Quarter
No sooner had the Patriots restarted
than Chicago scored again. Reggie
Phillips intercepted a Grogan pass and
ran it in from 28-yards. Butler added
the conversion and the score was 37-3.
The rout continued after 12 minutes of
the half when William 'Refrigerator'
Perry ran in a touchdown from 1 yard.
Inevitably, Butler converted to make it
44-3.
By this time it was a question of who
would score next for the Bears!

SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
4th Quarter
Jim McMahon suffered an injured wrist
and was replaced for the final quarter
by Steve Fuller for the Bears.
Irving Fryar scored a touchdown for the
Pats from an 8-yard Grogan pass. Tony
Franklin added the extra point to make
it 44-10 but it was a case of too
little, too late.
The Bears responded with another
interception of Grogan through Jim
Morrisey who ran it back to the 5-yard
line.

SUPERBOWL XX: CHICAGO vs NEW ENGLAND
4th Quarter
The Patriots' misery continued when
Steve Grogan was caught in his own end-
zone by Henry Waechter for a two-point
'safety'.
That, incidentally, tied the Superbowl
record for the most QB sacks at seven.
It also proved to be the final score of
the game.

AUSSIE FOOTBALL CARLTON V N.MELBOURNE
Carlton, leaders throughout most of the
match, found themselves in serious
trouble in the early stages of the
final quarter when a fresher looking
Melbourne side cut the Carlton lead to
just one goal.
The turnover that they had been
promising since the latter stages of
the third quarter finally came eleven
minutes into the fouqth.
It must have come as a great shock to
Carlton who seemed assured of an easy
victory after the first half.

AUSSIE FOOTBALL CARLTON V N.MELBOURNE
Carlton, undaunted even by a hamstring
injury that forced Alex Marcou to
retire from the match, fought back
strongly to trail by just one point
with five minutes remaining.
But North Melbourne had done too much
to be denied at such a late stage. A
second surge saw them score another
three goals to put Carlton out of the
running. Final scgre:
