But meanwhile today in our hospitals nearly 1/3 of te beds there are occupied by patients who are mentally ill or mentally handicapped; and 1 in 3 of those sitting in surgery waiting-rooms wait for cure from mental, not physical, suffering. As beds get fewer & queues get longer voluntary bodies & churches must be ready to share greater responsibility and a yet more significant role.
