DUMMY RUN....
Our grandmothers probably never queried
the wisdom of giving babies a dummy.
Tied onto the baby's clothing and
frequently dipped in honey "to make it
taste better" it was often an
indispensable aid to keeping baby happy
or rather, quiet.
By the time our mothers were bringing
up babies, opinon about dummies had
swung violently in the opposite
direction. The dummy was seen not only
as a nasty unhygenic thing but also a
sign of defeat - a comforter only used
by inadequate mothers. more follows

DUMMY RUN...
Nowadays the pendulum has swung back
into the middle of the problem: once
again, dummies are O.K. - provided
they're used within reason.
Dummy or no dummy, if babies want
comfort they'll find a solution: and a
very convenient substitute exists right
at the end of their arms - their
fingers and thumbs.
So, the informed advice nowadays is
that a dummy, used in moderation could
be preferable to fingers or thumbs, but
it's okay if baby uses either or both!

DUMMY RUN....
If you want to discourage the habit
of sucking, a dummy can always be
"lost" for lengthening perigds while
other distractions are provided. Thumbs
or fingers cannot so easily be mislaid,
they are always available.
Another reason for the opinion that
fingers and thumbs may rate second to
dummies is that they can exercise a
considerable "pull" on the teeth,
encouraging the teeth to grow forwards
if the child sucks for hours on end.

DUMMY RUN...
Babies in the womb have been seen to be
sucking their thumbs. It must be a very
deep need for comfort.
The small child may well resort to
dummy or thumb sucking if he or she
needs that feeling of reassurance:
going off to sleep; meeting a new
experience, or feeling worried.
But in the normal run of baby and
toddler life so many interesting things
are going on every day that an occupied
and inquisitive baby won't need to make
thumb sucking the main occupation of
his life, there won't be time! more >

DUMMY RUN....
If you provide a dummy, choose a well-
made one with a shield to prevent its
being swallowed. Keep it clean in the
same way that you would other baby
equipment - bottles, cups teats.
Never dip it in something sweet: that
way the baby's mouth would be
continually awash with sweet sticky
substances that would be of the utmost
harm to his or her growing teeth, not
to mention the danger of choking or
inhaling.

DUMMY RUN....
So using a dummy in moderation need
not be at all the shameful practice
our mothers thought.
What does matter is if the dummy is
used as a substitute for attention and
love.
No dummy, thumb, fingers or blankets
ever invented ought to be allowed to
take their places. And can't.
