P522ORACLE 522 Mon27 Jan C4 1712:29   COMMISSION OVERTURNED  ON BT TAKEOVER Trade Secretary Paul Channon has agreed to British Telecom's £180m takeover of Mitel, rejecting the key safeguard proposed by the Monopolies Commission. The commission agreed by a majority to allow the takeover although they ackowledged the acquisition was likely "to act against the public interest". But to avoid distorting the UK telecoms market, they called for BT to be prevented from acquiring for use in its public network any Mitel equipment.
