BRIDGING THE THAMES GAP
Ramblers will be able to walk across
the Thames at Temple near Maidenhead
with the building of a new footbridge
this summer. The bridge will link
Berks and Bucks so walkers can avoid
taking detours along main roads while
following the proposed 163 mile-long
Thames Walk from Thamesdown in the
Cotswolds to westminster.
Bucks county council produced the
designs for the laminated hardwogd
bridge which will span 80 metres of

Thames water authority have agreed to
pay £25,000 towards the bridge; the
Countryside Commission, £30,000; Bucks
and Berks CC's have offered £10,000
each and the Ramblers' Association are
contributing £9,000 from their Jubilee
Appeal.
Although other groups are helping,
money is still needed and any groups or
individuals wishing to contribute
should send donations to The Thames
Water Temple Footbridge Appeal Account,

Another new link in the Thames path at
Days Loch, near Dorchester, Oxfgrdshire
is scheduled to open later this year.
The water authority there has approved
public access over the weir and will
make safety improvements to the site.
The Thames Walk, a 64 page booklet is

WILLING WALKERS?
While discovering the joys of the
countryside on their weekly walks, the
Isle of Wight Rambler's Association
also make note of the less than lovely
sights - and then set to work on them.
RA members have cleared paths, tidied
areas and celebrated their 50th
anniversary last year by building their
100th wooden stile on footpaths around
the Isle of Wight.

them building another new stile on a

Materials are provided by the local
council who approach land owners for
permission where necessary.
An Isle of Wight RA work party gathers
together once a month, usually on a
Saturday morning. Work is dividied into
two: lighter jobs (with secateurs and
so on) for less able and the team who
do the more strenuous jobs.
They always need volunteers, so if you

PEDAL AWAY
Inexperienced cyclists needn't miss out
on a cycling holiday, RoSPA's Natignal
Bike Club has teamed up with Bike
Events and come up with an adventure on
two wheels, a Coast to Coast Ride.
The expedition to pedal from the Irish
Sea to the North Sea runs from July 12
to July 19. Starting in Blackpogl and
ending in Scarborough,the route crosses
the Pennines, the Vale of York and the
North Yorkshire Moors, using quiet
lanes so there's no fears of heavy

PEDAL AWAY
The Coast to Coast ride is aimed to
give novices chance to sample a cycling
holiday without the hassles of luggage,
breakdowns or finding accommodation and
meals. A marshal and 'breakdown wagon'
will accompany each group of riders.
Meals are provided and a tent for
sleeping in, and the best news - heavy
luggage follows in a lorry, so cyclists
can travel light!
