■ A new Business Expansion Fund has
been set up to invest in businesses run
by women. The Leading Ladies scheme
will fund at least 5 companies and
investors may contribute anything from
£2,500 to £40,000.
■ Green Park Health Care, another BES
fund, hopes to raise around £2m to
invest in nursing homes for the elderly
■ Barclaycard has had its most success-
ful year ever with, for the first time,
cardholders topping the 8 million mark.

■ Insurance company charges cancel out
one fifth of what we invest in personal
pension plans, according to Mr Geoffrey
Bernstein of the City University.

tions to charity from their taxable
income if the Government goes ahead
with a scheme it's considering.
■ Investors found building societies
more attractive last December, leaving
National Savings £400m behind the

■ Good Housekeeping has launched a
Sharewatchers' Guide. The magazine
bought shares in 10 leading companies,
which donated £1,000 each. Every month
the shares will be monitored and, after
a year, the shares will be sold, with
any proceeds going to charity.
■ Lawyers are hardly poor but a new
report shows that, in fact, solicitors
in private practice earn less than, say
bank managers or the police. 10% of all
self-employed solicitors earned £5,300
or less (before tax) in 1984. A quarter
earned £13,400 or less.
