GHOSTS IN THE
MACHINE
Ghosts In The Machine, tomorrow night
at 11.25pm, has a slightly lighter
flavour than previous editions, with
a selection of comic videos made by
American artists.
In general, independent video in the
States has been more readily accepted
and funded, with greater opportunities
for broadcast on the public service
stations and arts cable networks.
As a result many of the videos being
produced by American artists have been
more approachable than those of their
English counterparts, and the works
featured tomorrow are no exception.

GHOSTS IN THE
MACHINE
Included in tomorrow's selection of
US videos is Tom Rubnitz's "Made For
TV" which is a good example of an
entertaining tape "which carries more
than enough critical bite".
"Made For TV" allows performance artist
Anne Magnuson to scramble through the
gamut of TV presenters and advertising
stereotypes "with devastating bravado".
The mayhem of this mishmash of images
is countered with information about
public TV, and the whole becomes a
fast and funny spoof on the monster
that is American television.

GHOSTS IN THE
MACHINE
In "A Personal History of the American
Theatre" the uniquely-talented actor
Spalding Gray delivers a hilarious
monologue straight to camera.
Reflecting on his experiences in the
acting world Gray keeps up a frenzied
pace, upstaging many of those more
accustomed to the "talking head"
format for television.
Ghosts In The Machine is on C4 tomorrow
night at 11.25pm, and if you would like
fuller details of the videos shown in
the series there is a back-up leaflet
available - see page 457.
