CHINESE IN BRITAIN
There's more to the Chinese in Britain
than sweet and sour pork and egg fried
rice.
That's the message coming loud and
clear from a pair of programmes coming
up this weekend entitled Chinese In
Britain.
Oriental Expressions, last night
demonstrated the talents of Chinese
artists in Britain.
The range of arts on display includes
painting, design and music.

CHINESE IN BRITAIN
Oriental Expressions featured examples
of traditional Chinese art forms such
as calligraphy and painting.
But there were also examples of more
modern artistic endeavour such as the
work of an oriental fashion designer
who sees London as a centre for a
cultural blending of East and West.
Two Chinese musicians provided moving
performances, one a child maestro on
the violin; the other a teenage
zither player who revealed the gentle
beauty of this ancient instrument.

CHINESE IN BRITAIN
The second of the pair of programmes
showing different aspects of the
Chinese in Britain is Vote For Wong.
It looks at the relationship of the
Chinese community to the British
political system.
The Chinese have generally been thought
of as an industrious and family-loving
community but such stereotyping masks
the less attractive reality of what it
means to be Chinese In Britain.
A recent report confirmed that the
Chinese are a disadvantaged minority.

CHINESE IN BRITAIN
According to the Parliamentary report,
the Chinese community's needs have been
largely ignored, particularly in the
areas of housing and health care.
Some Chinese are now beginning to try
and make their community more
politically aware.
This is a daunting task as less than
one in ten Chinese bother to turn up
at the polls.
And without representatives at local
level, little can be done to put
matters right.

And in Glasgow, 18-year-old Jenny Chan
became Britain's youngest community
councillor and an example to all
Chinese in Britain.

A SENSE OF PLACE
The final programme in the group of
three from Northern Ireland in which
Ulster poets talk about their
inspiration features John Montague.
Montague was born in New York in 1929,
but as a young child his moved back to
Ireland, to County Tyrone, to the town
of Garvaghey.
Tyrone is a particularly beautiful
county, with wild Irish landscapes and
forests steeped in myth and Gaelic
legend. It's small wonder Montague was
inspired to write poetry.

A SENSE OF PLACE
Garvaghey, where Montague grew up, (it
means 'the rough field') was a place
rich in folklore and history.
Today, the ancient Stones of Garvaghey
still remain but the community has
changed.
In the last programme in A Sense of
Place poet John Montague travels
through Tyrone and Fermanagh.
He visits the Catholics after Mass and
talks to his neighbours, and also tours
several Protestant churches.

A SENSE OF PLACE
Travelling along the country lanes on a
tractor, Montague recalls the people
who lived there 30 years ago, heroes of
his childhood.
New silos and bright bungalows have
been imposed on the ancient landscape -
and a new road has destroyed many
layers of rural life.
The townland name of "Garvaghey" has
now been changed into 205 Omagh Road.
