BADMINTON NEWS
On Sunday March 16 C4 plans to cover
the All England Championships, long
considered the top tournament in the
world until the institution of the
first World Championships in 1977.
Unlike the World Championships, which
are only held every three years, the
All England Championships take place
annually, and attract the sport's top
players.
For the time being however make a date
with C4 this Thursday at 5.00pm for the
English National. And just in you
forget, there'll be results and reports
on this page. More >

AUSSIE FOOTBALL PLAY-OFFS
With Carlton out of the running after

FOOTSCRAY 16 6 0
HAWTHORN 15 6 1
N.MELBOURNE 13 8 1
Hawthorn had a comfortable 155-62 win

AUSSIE FOOTBALL PLAY-OFFS
League leaders Essendon beat Hawthorn
102-62 to ensure a place in their third
sucessive Grand Final leaving Hawthorn
& Footscray to contest the other Grand
Final place in today's televised semi.
Hawthorn were clearly favourites having
joined Essendon in the last two Grand
Finals. Footscray by comparison had
everything to prove, it being a decade
since they last made a Grand Final
series.
There was however little to separate
the two well into the third quarter,
with Hawthorn holding on to a slim ten
point lead More >

AUSSIE FOOTBALL PLAY-OFFS
Footscray's hopes of winning the
Preliminary Final took a severe knock
half way through the third quarter when
Dunstall took a mark from a superb kick
by Kennedy just metres in front of goal
Dunstall duly obliged to open a 16
point lead - the biggest break in the
match at 59-43.
But McClean responded quickly fgr
Footscray to augment their score for
the first time in almost half an hour,
and reduce the deficit once again to
just ten points.

AUSSIE FOOTBALL PLAY-OFFS
A rush of blood to the head threatened
to end Footscray's chances as Hawthorn
capitalised on a number of rash
manoeuvres to open a 17 point lead.
But just as Footscrau looked a beaten
side they came back with determination
and superlative play to hit the lead
with three successive goals, the third
off an inspired run by Brad Hardie.
Two behinds by Hawthorn gave them back
the lead at 68-67 going into the final
quarter.

AUSSIE FOOTBALL PLAY-OFFS
Footscray struck first in the final
quarter to once again take the lead,
but Hawthorn, undaunted by the Bulldogs
surge, were not to be denied.
Veteran Hawk Lee Matthews' appearance
in the final quarter (in this his last
season) provided Hawthorn with the
inspiration and guidance they needed as
they quickly opened a 23 point lead.
It proved too great a lead fgr
Footscray who finally lost by 109-99.
Next week, the Grand Final between
Hawthorn and Essendon.
