AHTLETES EAT STODGE
A new book published this week says
British athletes are at a disadvantage
when they compete in international
events because they eat the wrong fogd.
"Food for Sport" by nutritionists Peter
Otway and Dr. Kevin Hargin claims that
coaches have told their charges to eat
lots of high protein food like steak to
build muscles up for a big event.
Instead they should be concentrating on
foods high in carbohydrate such as rice
potatoes, pasta. Many foreign athletes
already do this. The book is available
from 45 Hobson Street, Cambridge, price
£4.95 post paid. more follows >

END CONTRACEPTIVE CONFUSION
Representatives from the British
Medical Association, The Brook Advisory
Centres and the Family Planning
Association have urged health minister
Barney Hayhoe to give clear guidance on
contraceptive advice to the under 16's.
They have warned him of the alarmingly
high rate of teenage pregnancies, and
told him that it will only be brought
down if the confusion caused by the
Law Lords' decision on the Gillick case
is cleared up. They also want birth
control services for teenagers
improved. more follows >

SDP PLANS FOR HEALTH CARE
As befits the party which pioneered the
computerisation of political recgrds,
the SDP would also like to see the
creation of comprehensive data banks
to back primary health care.
In a recently published discussion
paper, they suggest that family
practitioner committees should keep
computerised registers of families at
risk. They also envisage a central
DHSS data bank which, while being
available to all primary health care
workers, would enable the Department to
spread resources more fairly. more >

PMS REVEALED
This week, WOMAN magazine publish the
preliminary results of their mammoth
survey into pre-menstrual syndrome.
Over 7,500 women sent in answers to
the magazine's questionnaire, and the
information gathered will take years
to collate and analyse. An early break-
down shows an astonishing amount of
hidden misery.
Women wrote about how they attacked
partners, nearly crashed their cars and
even attempted suicide - all under the
influence of their hormone cycles. And
they got precious little sympathy from
their GPs - even from women GPs! more >

IS YOUR CHILD HYPERACTIVE?
A new book has just been published
called "The Hyperactive Child: A
Parents' Guide" (Martin Dunitz, £3.95)
Written by the Maudsley Hospital's Dr.
Eric Taylor, it should help worried
parents decide whether their boisterous
and apparently sleepless toddler is
just simply that, or is suffering from
the real hyperactivity syndrome.
The actual cause of hyperactivity is
little known, but the good news is -
most children grow out of it!
