TANDEM THOUBLES
The RAC came to the rescue when two
cyclists broke down during a sponsored
tandem ride from Lands End to Hyde
Park Corner.
Julian Philipps from Essex and Mark
Sprague from Herts were on the first
leg of their 290 mile ride to raise
money for leukaemia research when their
wheel spindle went in Cornwall.
Julian called the RAC who took the two
plus tandem to a bicycle repair shop in
Tiverton, Devon. The RAC had provided
the routes for the ride. more follows >

THE WORLD - BY TANDEM
The tandem has been specially built for
the couple who have been training very
hard for the past year - while raising
money for their trip and getting
sponsors to help the National Deaf
Children's Society.
Isabelle and Chris are taking as little
luggage as possible which they'll pull
along in a special trailer, and in
panniers. They're not sure where they
will stay at night, but have already
contacted centres for deaf children in
most countries which they hope to visit
to survey facilities wgrldwide. more >

FOR
RAMBLERS
DON'T WALK THIS WAY
Stone Henge out of bounds for walkers
during the summer solstice? No way, say
the Ramblers Association who will
oppose National Trust attempts to close
public rights of way around Stonehenge
this summer.
For several weeks in 1985,rights of way
within a wide radius of Stonehenge were
officially closed by traffic regulation
orders from Wilts County Council. These
were made at the request of the
National Trust and English Heritage for
"public safety reasons" or so Wilts CC

FOR
RAMBLERS
DON'T WALK THIS WAY -2
"The path closures were made, as every
one knows, to protect Sonehenge and
other ancient monuments nearby from
damage by the arrival of a pop festival
convoy",says the RA'S Alan Mattingly in
the latest issue of Rucksack.
While the RA supports the objective of
protecting ancient monuments,it doesn't
agree with the wholesale closure of a
significant number of paths for two
months or so to achieve these ends.
The compromise would be to temporarily
divert some footpaths away from
Stonehenge, say the RA, though they'd
only agree if there was a legally sound
basis to impose these. more on Monday >
