handling a record £20.3m of investgru'
money in December 1985, according to
the Unit Trust Association.
■ Abbey National building society is
offering home-buyers a certificate
stating how much the society has agreed
to lend. The certificate, valid for 3
months, can be shown to vendors and
estate agents to prove an offer on a
property is serious.

■ Midland Bank is offering free advice
and free business banking to anyone
taking part in the Manpower Services
Commission Enterprise Allowance Scheme.
The government recently announced that
the Scheme is to increase its intake
to 80,000. Applicants must have been
unemployed for at least 8 weeks and
have £1,000 to invest in their new
business. Successful applicants get an
Enterprise Allowance of £40 a week for
the first year.

■ Two men have found a treasure trove
of 1,000 Roman silver coins.
■ A report from the Law Society has
called for more money for the Legal Aid
system. Costs rose by 15.6% in 1984-5
compared with 9.2% in 1983-4.

harder for them to get credit, says a
study from the Equal Opportunities
Commission. Scoring sytems are used in
9 out of 10 decisions on whether to
lend money.
■ Country vicar Ivo Morshead has saved
£80 a year by claiming tax relief on
a computer, which he uses to prepare
sermons and store church records!
■ Petrol prices in Scotland and North-

TANDEM THOUBLES
The RAC came to the rescue when two
cyclists broke down during a sponsored
tandem ride from Lands End to Hyde
Park Corner.
Julian Philipps from Essex and Mark
Sprague from Herts were on the first
leg of their 290 mile ride to raise
money for leukaemia research when their
wheel spindle went in Cornwall.
Julian called the RAC who took the two
plus tandem to a bicycle repair shop in
Tiverton, Devon. The RAC had prgvided
the routes for the ride.

Meanwhile Isabelle Attas and Chris
Burton who set off on a sponsored
tandem ride round the world last
Thursday are sailing towards Australia.
Once there, they'll cycle back via the
Far East, China, Hong Kong, Bangkok,
Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey, Greece,
Italy, North Africa and Spain. From
here they'll sail across N Atlantic to
North America to ride through Canada,
USA, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina then
back to England by boat!
